The fastest female was Danielle D'angelo of New Rochelle, N.Y. She made it to the top ten overall.

Saint Pat's 5K

Ninety-seven friends of the Boys and Girls Club showed up to run the 8th annual Ocean View Saint Patrick’s Day 5K, Sunday, a 31 percent increase over last year’s field.

The weather couldn’t have been nicer for runners and watchers alike, ratifying the calendar’s announcement of spring.

Maybe the runners spent too much time enjoying the weather, or more likely it was the new 5K route, hillier than before, but finishing times tended to be slower than last year’s. Of course everyone was a year older and that could be an adequate explanation for most, but sixteen-year-old Stephen Lipsett of Walpole finished third, Sunday, in 19:05. Last year, at 15 years, his time was 18:40.

Leonard Verville, 41, of Oak Bluffs was first to complete the course in 18:45, pursued Carlos Borges, 39, of Tyngsboro in 18:49 and Stephen Lipsett, 16, of Walpole.

The rest of the top ten males were (4) Dana Gaines, 47, Edgartown, 19:26 (5) Jeffery Mader, 48, Sudbury, 19:32 (6) David Diriwachter, 35, Oak Bluffs, 19:51 (7) John Piekos, 40, Westford, 20:06 (8) Garry Metters, 39, Vineyard Haven, 20:21 (9) Dan Vaughan, 29, Edgartown, 21:10 (10) Joe Schroeder, 41, West Tisbury, 21:27.

The top 10 female finishers were (1) Danielle, D’angelo, 43, New Rochelle, N.Y. 21:11 (2) Genevieve Flanders, 18, Chilmark, 22:28 (3) Kate Shanor, 39, Oak Bluffs, 23:28 (4) Anne Williamson, 40, Edgartown, 24:31 (5) Allyson Cook, 29, Oak Bluffs, 24:32 (6) Emily Cooney, 24, Edgartown, 24:43 (7) Katie Mucciarone, 17, South Walpole, 25:24 (8) Phyllis Kugler, 58, West Tisbury, 27:03 (9) Diane Nolan, 39, Vineyard Haven, 27:26 (10) Marcela Pouliot, 32, Edgartown, 27:32.

Three runners under the age of 10 finished the course, led by 5 year-old Anthony Jackson of Tisbury in 47:50. Austin Morely, 7, of Oak Bluffs made it in 50:44, and 9-year-old Callie Jackson of Tisbury’s time was 51:50.

The first Challenge Cup

Four relay teams or individuals representing town fire departments competed for the Martha’s Vineyard Boys & Girls Club Relay Challenge Cup won by Jim Neville for the Sheriff’s Deputies. The relay team running for the OBFD was George Fisher, Jim Maseda, and Willie DeBettencourt. The Edgartown FD was represented by Kara Shemeth, Joel Graves, and Chris Harge. Jim Branch ran for the West Tisbury F.D.

The MV junior high youth lacrosse players, led by Kate Cecilio and Hayley Pierce, ran the 5K with their coach, Kira Law.

Advantage Lakers

The annual Island version of March Madness pits the survivors of earlier RCBL playoff matches against each other in the league’s final three-game series. This year it’s the undefeated Timberwolves versus the league’s most experienced team, the Lakers.

As has been the case all year long, all ten Wolves showed up to play. The Lakers, which had to make do with just five players last week, turned out eight.

The first quarter belonged to the Wolves. Jason O’Donnell scored eight of the Wolves’ first 10 points from the low post and with two triples by Mike Joyce and four hoops in a row by Asil Cash, the Canines sat on an 11-point lead after 12 minutes, 29-18.

The Lakers made a move early in the second period. Hoops by Heath Estrella, a trey by Albie Robinson, a put-back by Carl Kallinich with a couple of Wolves crowding him and Robinson’s court-long dash to the rim made it a three-point game, 30-27. But Mike Joyce and Asil Cash restored the Wolves’ lead and then some, 41-27.

At the half the Wolves were ahead by a dozen, 53-41.

The blow was just what the Lakers needed. They ran off 18 points in three minutes to overtake the Lobos and even lead for the first time, 59-58. Then Cash and Chris Joyce took charge of a Wolf drive and the pack ended the third quarter nine up, 78-69.

It took three and a half minutes for Albie Robinson and Elmer Silva to restore the Laker lead, 84-83. The score was tied at 84 and again at 86. Then the Lakers edged ahead. Buckets by Robinson, Estrella, Albie again, two more by Heath, plus a freebie by Kallinich and a running right-hander by Elmer Silva, and the Lakers began to smell victory with a 99-90 edge with three minutes on the clock.

The Wolves called a time out and opted to go the intentional foul route. But Healy and Estrella cashed four free ones and despite two treys by Cash the Lakers held on to the lead. At the buzzer the score was 106-102.

It was a spirited game and once or twice threatened to get out of hand, but officials Ryan Ruley and Dave Cassidy enforced the rules and things went “decently and in order.”

It was the first taste of bitter defeat for the Timberwolves after 13 straight wins. The Lakers were 5-6 for the season and survived a bruising playoff series with the Patriots. Monday’s win gave them an 8-7 record.

Asil Cash had the game high 42. Mike Joyce finished with 20 points including six triples, Brother Chris Joyce chipped in 14 and Jason O’Donnell contributed nine. Elmer Silva (33) and Albie Robinson (30) led Laker scorers. Elmer dropped eight from long distance. Carl Kallinich had 22 and Heath Estrella, 16. Kallinich and John Healy collected a bushel of rebounds.

The second game will be Monday at 7 pm in the Boys & Girls Club. Game three, if needed, will be Thursday, March 31, also at 7 pm.
