Among the 1,340 who ran the 28th New Bedford half marathon, Sunday, were three Islanders. Marylee Schroeder of West Tisbury was the fastest, finishing 531st in 1:39:32. At 660 was Jennifer Estabrook of Vineyard Haven, in 1:44:40. Bill Brown completed the race in 1:45:53. He was 686th.

Major darts tourney

The 27th annual Martha’s Vineyard Dart Tournament, sponsored by Budweiser and the Holy Ghost Assn., with more than $3,000 in prize money and trophies on the line, will be held April 22-24 at the Portuguese-American Club, Vineyard Avenue, Oak Bluffs. Hockey banquets

At the Boys Hockey Booster Club’s awards banquet Sunday at the Atlantic Connection, a number of players were recognized.

Junior varsity sportsmanship awards were given to Kenny MacDonald and Marc Levesque.

Before announcing the varsity awards, Coach Matt Mincone remarked, “these guys didn’t quit for one shift this year.”

Receiving the Coach’s Award and appointment as captain next year was Stephen Greenberg. Alex Avakian and Ryan Rossi will be alternate captains.

The most improved player award went to Zach Sylvia.

The Most Valuable Player was Jordan Hoehn.

The milestone award for not missing a practice or game in four years went to Mike Giordano.

A special Booster Club prize was awarded to Nancy Giordano for her four years as president of the club.

Kenny Goldberg of Channel 10 honored senior players Simon Goldberg, Jordan Hoehn, Finn Briggs, Pete Lynch, Patrick Smadbeck, Jamie Smadbeck, Eli Bonnell, Mike Giordano, and Nick Townes.

Girls Banquet

The Girls Hockey Booster Club provided a lasagna dinner for the MVRHS varsity and junior varsity and girls youth hockey players, parents and coaches at the high school, Monday, March 7.

Individual awards were not given. Coach Sam Sherman told The Times, “I preached team and teamwork all season long. It would be inconsistent for me to call attention to certain players at the end of the season.”

Benefit triathlon

The second annual Nan-Ke-Race, a triathlon in Nickerson State Park, Brewster, will be held Sunday, May 1. The race is a fundraiser for Dream Day on Cape Cod, a non-profit organization benefiting families of children with life-threatening diseases. All of Dream Day’s services are offered at no cost to the families.

The race is a 3-mile run, followed by an 800-yard canoe or kayak paddle, and a 7-mile mountain bike ride.

Participants may enter as individuals or teams of 2, 3, or 4, and there will be prizes for the top three finishers in each category.

A special prize, the Public Service Hero Award, will go to the winning town team of any public service. Last year’s winners were the Chatham Coast Guard team. All Cape and Island towns may compete for this special award.

Mintonette

Most sports fans know that basketball was invented in Massachusetts at what is now called Springfield College and that the game’s hall of fame is located in Springfield, Mass. The inventor, James Naismith, was a physical education instructor at what was then called the International YMCA Training School. For goals, in 1891, Naismith put two half-bushel peach baskets on poles, hence the game’s name.

Fewer fans are aware that volleyball is also a Massachusetts invention. In 1895, William G. Morgan, physical director of the YMCA in Holyoke, created a game he first called mintonette for middle-aged men for whom basketball, already a popular sport, was “too vigorous.” A friend at Springfield suggested the happy name change.

Like basketball, volleyball has evolved over the years. In its present form a point is awarded each time the ball is served. Formerly when the serving team lost serve on a “side out,” no point was awarded. The winning score used to be 15. Now it is 25 except for the final game of a five game set when 15 wins again.

Darting

On Thursday, March 10, Dave Bettencourt and buddies: Laurie Maciel, Kurt Tesch, and Peter Valentzas, mauled the Steve Maciel mob, 8-3 at the P.A. Club.

The following week Tim Fullin and friends bested the Bettencourt bunch, 8-3.

Dave Bettencourt’s team tops the standings with 51 points followed by Steve Furtaw’s (47) and Steve Maciel’s (46)

Futsal

In the Sunday futsal triple-header at the Boys & Girls Club, Coop deVille edged North Star, 5-4, taking over first place in the league standings. Other winners were Wrap ‘n’ Roll over Island Star, 7-2, and Scottish Bakehouse beat Benitos, 9-5.

Futsal finals will be played at the B&G on Sunday, April 17.

Macayah Goodell's arabesque technique on the balance beam helped her qualify for the states in May.
Gymnastics

Eight Island gymnasts at level five and six did their best to qualify for competition at the state level at the first sectional meet of the season, Sunday, at Brestyan’s in Ashland.

Four of the girls made it. The other four will have another chance April 24, at Fitchburg.

Matte Horton, 12, finished first all-around at level 6 with a score of 35.7, 3.7 more than was needed to qualify. She was first on floor, vault and uneven bars, second on the balance beam.

At level 5, Macayah Goodell was second all-around with 33. She was first on bars and beam, third on floor and vault.

Bailey Moreis was third all-around with a qualifying score of 32.10. She was second on floor and vault, third on bars and beam.

Also qualifying, Lauren Dostel was fifth on bars among 9- and 10-year-old gymnasts

New at level 5, Chantal Booker was best on floor (8.05) and bars (7.7) and will join the three level 6 girls at Fitchburg: Amanda Good, Niki Alexander, and Hannah Webster.

Barnstable baskets

The MV Youth Basketball boys all-stars won two of three games at the Barnstable Youth Tournament last weekend. The Islanders trounced Falmouth, 42-30. Balanced scoring kept the Vineyard ahead throughout the game. Falmouth mustered a late run at the lead, but MV held them off. Peter Ferrini paced the MV offense with 7 points. Nick Gross had 6 and Alex Poole, 5.

MV played a very good Wayland team tough and even led by as much as six twice in the second half. But Wayland’s 1-3-1 half-court press stymied the Islanders and Wayland ran off with a 59-43 win. Cody Brewer led MV scorers with 14. Both Jess Swaringer and James Todd contributed seven.

Using a full-court press, MV jumped to an early lead versus Sandwich and with good foul shooting fended off a late Sandwich surge. Final score: MV 46, Sandwich 32. Ross (11), Todd (8) and Brewer (5) led the way to the bucket.

The MV all-stars will play in the Bourne tourney, April 2-3.

Bantams at Springfield

The MV Youth Hockey Bantam A squad played in the state tournament at Springfield last weekend, winning one of three games against some of the Commonwealth’s best.

The Islanders lost to Somerville, Friday, 6-1, and to Westwood, Saturday morning, 4-2, then beat Franklin City, 5-1.

Elliot Bilzerian scored in the Somerville game, assisted by Tad Gold. Tad scored twice against Westwood assisted by Truman French and Matthew Flynn.

The scorers in the Franklin game were Scott Cleary (2), Jason Schwab (2), and Tad Gold. Assisting were Truman French, Matthew Flynn, Elliot Bilzerian, Cleary, and Cristina Wiley. Head Coach Jack D’Arcy said Cristina “played great.”

Shaun MacThail was assistant coach.

Where are they now?

Jenev Schilling of Vineyard Haven, a sophomore at Hartwick College, is one of six members of the school’s field hockey team named to the NFHCA Division III National Academic Squad. The Hawks not only received the team academic award, they were the Empire 8 champions and reached the quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament.

Elizabeth and Erin Gunn (MVRHS ‘00) of West Tisbury ran the Ocean Drive 5K at Miami Beach Saturday. Elizabeth was second female overall at 19:48. Erin was first in her gender/age group at 20:10.

More than 1,000 were registered in the benefit for the Lance Armstrong Cancer Foundation.
