Individual awards were not given. Coach Sam Sherman told The Times,
I preached team and teamwork all season long. It would be inconsistent
for me to call attention to certain players at the end of the season.
Benefit triathlon
The second annual Nan-Ke-Race, a triathlon in Nickerson State Park,
Brewster, will be held Sunday, May 1. The race is a fundraiser for
Dream Day on Cape Cod, a non-profit organization benefiting families

Participants may enter as individuals or teams of 2, 3, or 4, and
there will be prizes for the top three finishers in each category.

Mintonette
Most sports fans know that basketball was invented in Massachusetts
at what is now called Springfield College and that the games
hall of fame is located in Springfield, Mass. The inventor, James
Naismith, was a physical education instructor at what was then called
the International YMCA Training School. For goals, in 1891, Naismith
put two half-bushel peach baskets on poles, hence the games
name.
Fewer fans are aware that volleyball is also a Massachusetts invention.
In 1895, William G. Morgan, physical director of the YMCA in Holyoke,
created a game he first called mintonette for middle-aged men for
whom basketball, already a popular sport, was too vigorous.
A friend at Springfield suggested the happy name change.
Like basketball, volleyball has evolved over the years. In its present
form a point is awarded each time the ball is served. Formerly when
the serving team lost serve on a side out, no point was
awarded. The winning score used to be 15. Now it is 25 except for
the final game of a five game set when 15 wins again.
Darting
On Thursday, March 10, Dave Bettencourt and buddies: Laurie Maciel,
Kurt Tesch, and Peter Valentzas, mauled the Steve Maciel mob, 8-3
at the P.A. Club.
The following week Tim Fullin and friends bested the Bettencourt bunch,
8-3.
Dave Bettencourts team tops the standings with 51 points followed
by Steve Furtaws (47) and Steve Maciels (46)
Futsal
In the Sunday futsal triple-header at the Boys & Girls Club, Coop
deVille edged North Star, 5-4, taking over first place in the league
standings. Other winners were Wrap n Roll over Island
Star, 7-2, and Scottish Bakehouse beat Benitos, 9-5.
Futsal finals will be played at the B&G on Sunday, April 17.

Barnstable baskets
The MV Youth Basketball boys all-stars won two of three games at the
Barnstable Youth Tournament last weekend. The Islanders trounced Falmouth,
42-30. Balanced scoring kept the Vineyard ahead throughout the game.
Falmouth mustered a late run at the lead, but MV held them off. Peter
Ferrini paced the MV offense with 7 points. Nick Gross had 6 and Alex
Poole, 5.
MV played a very good Wayland team tough and even led by as much as
six twice in the second half. But Waylands 1-3-1 half-court
press stymied the Islanders and Wayland ran off with a 59-43 win.
Cody Brewer led MV scorers with 14. Both Jess Swaringer and James
Todd contributed seven.
Using a full-court press, MV jumped to an early lead versus Sandwich
and with good foul shooting fended off a late Sandwich surge. Final
score: MV 46, Sandwich 32. Ross (11), Todd (8) and Brewer (5) led
the way to the bucket.
The MV all-stars will play in the Bourne tourney, April 2-3.
Bantams at Springfield

at Springfield last weekend, winning one of three games against some
