Hit pay dirt

Jacques Penicaud pitched a six-inning two-hitter at Falmouth, Friday but had to swallow the 3-2 loss when the Vineyard’s late rally fell just short. Trailing 3-0, MV scored twice in the sixth to draw within one, then loaded the bases in the top of the seventh before conceding.

Penicaud fanned six Clippers. Falmouth’s Tyler Young struck out three and gave up three hits in six innings.

MV continued getting strong efforts by its pitching staff, Monday, as Matt Kurth scattered four hits and held Foxboro to a single run, while striking out six. With the scored tied at one, the Islanders crossed the plate three times in the top of the sixth. Billy Panek singled. Ryan Rossi walked. Josh Cotterill’s bouncer went for a bases loading base hit. Adam Herman’s single drove in Panek, and another by Jacques Penicaud scored Rossi and Cotterill.

The Islanders’ (1-2) next three games are all on the road: Thursday at Bourne, Friday at New Bedford, Tuesday at Rockland.

Softies win two

The MVRHS softball team got its first win of the season at home versus Dennis-Yarmouth on Thursday, when Kelsey Perry scored from third, driven in by Brittany Stone’s ground out in the bottom of the sixth.

MV took an early 2-0 lead on Kathryn DeBettencourt’s two RBI double in the first. D/Y tied it in the top of the second.

MV pitcher Brielle Leonard gave up six hits and struck out six.

The Islanders went quietly Friday; Old Rochester shut them out, 6-0.

It was no contest Monday at Chatham as the Islanders scored 16 times and pitcher Leonard struck out 12 allowing only two hits in a shutout. Brielle helped her own cause with a triple and four RBIs. Kathryn DeBettencourt had two doubles and a triple and drove in three. Kelsey Perry hit safely three times and Kelly Sylvia scored four runs.

The girls varsity (2-3) is at Bourne today. The JV plays Bourne here.
