Carver spoils track home debut

Carver brought its large and talented track and field teams to the Vineyard for a chilly, wind-blown meet on Tuesday, and went home with the pleasant feelings that come from a job well and winningly done.

The MV boys led at the conclusion of the field events, 32-22. Derek Nagengast and Jim Bishop were 1-2 in the shot put with heaves of 42’ 4” and 38’ 10”. Tim Luce tossed the discus 113’ 4” and Bishop 106’ 4” for first and third. Spencer Hughes and Lucas Brewer were win and place with the javelin at 128’ 9” and 127’ 9”.

Mitchell Moreis and Steven Greenberg were second and third in the high jump at 5’ 4” and 5’ 2”. Brewer was second in the long jump with a 20’ 2.5” leap. And Connor Rasmussen took second in the triple with a 38’ 7” effort.

Islanders won three of the seven races. Jackson Parker held on to win the two-mile run by two yards in 10:45.

Mitch Robinson and Logan Russell were 1-3 in the 800m.

Tim Luce and Mitchell Moreis were first and third in the high hurdles. Nagengast and Steve Serusa gave the Vineyard second and third points in the 400, as did Brewer and Jackson in the 200, and Chris Post and Jackson Parker in the mile. Carver swept the 100.

The Vineyard still led by two points with the 4x100 and 4x400 relays remaining. Carver won them both to take the meet, 72-64.

The girls meet was not so close. Alice Hopkins won both the shot put (31’ 1/2”) and Discus (95’ 6”) and Katrina Nevin cleared 4’ 8” to win the high jump. MV picked up second place points in the long jump and third in the discus.

Carver won all of the races, including the two relays.

Gen Flanders and Nica Sylvia were 2-3 in the two-mile run.

Morgan Ibarrondo was second over the high and low hurdles and Randi Sylvia took third in the highs.

Alison Flanders came in second in the mile and Alice Hopkins third in the 400. All the rest was Carver’s. Their margin of victory was 94-42.

Back row, left to right: Robin Fitzpatrick, Jan Burhman, Vickie Thurber, Judy Schubert, Angela Grant, Linda Metell, Sue Fairbanks and Coach Townes. Front row: Jody Stephens, Jackie Meehan, Chrissy McCarthy, Tara Simmons, Paula Rego, and Sue Mead. Missing: Rebecca Taylor.

Ladies on ice

The MV Women’s Ice Hockey team competed in a three-day tournament at Norwich, Conn., recently and did as well as they could without taking the gold.

After winning three qualifying games, the Islanders were ranked first out of ten teams, earning a place at the table in the championship round, matched with Queenstown, Penn.

At the end of regulation play, the score was 0-0.

After a five-minute sudden-death OT period, the game was still scoreless. The next tie-breaker was a five-woman shoot-out, ending with a 1-1 tie. Jody Stephens scored for the Vineyard. Another 5-woman shoot-out was called for and this time the Pennsylvanians won.

Team coordinator Linda Metell called it a “total team effort” and pointed out the fact that each member of the squad had either scored a goal or assisted during the tourney. Goalie Sue Mead had two shut-outs to her credit.

Coach Gene Townes lauded the women. “They have worked hard all year and have become very dedicated, driven, true hockey players.”

Coach Townes was assissted by Rob Searle.

The team plans to continue skating this summer on Monday nights from 7:30 and will welcome new players of all skill levels.

League commissioner Sara Ahren is also a catcher.
Women at play

Some sixty women have shown up to play pick-up softball games at Tisbury’s Veteran’s Memorial Park the last Tuesday evenings and “Commissioner” Sara Ahren figures there are as many as 90 who will want to play in the league beginning in June.

Last Tuesday there were six complete teams and not a few spectators enjoying the soft version of the national pastime at the park.

The registration fee for the league is $20.

For more information, call Sara at 693-8365.
