Jennings
Frank Jennings, the Islands premier bicycle rider, has returned
from China and Belgium in time for the spring racing season.
In Florida, Frank won a mountain bike race near Pensacola using his
cyclocross in one-hour, 50-minute challenge. He finished 20 minutes
ahead of the second rider even though he raced in the open class.
Last Sunday Frank won the 53-mile Turtle Pond race north of Concord,
N.H. he broke away from the 70-man field at the 11-mile mark and rode
by himself until caught by his teammate Paul Curley and by Tyler Monroe
of Andover, Frank soon broke away again to finish alone 20 seconds
ahead of Paul.
Youth lacrosse
The MV Youth lacrosse girls U-15 team lost to a tough Hull team last
week, 4-3. Kate Cecilio scored twice and Hayley Pierce once. Laura
Jernegan and Zoe Fisher took turns in goal.
The U-13 split with Hull, 9-4 and 3-1. Goalies Eva Faber and Shivonne
Schofield had 12 saves.
This weekend the teams are at Sandwich. The U-15s are 1-1. The U-13s
are 0-2.
Little League
In Little League majors action last week, the Dodgers topped the Tigers,
6-1, behind the no-hit, 8K, 3-inning pitching of William Stewart and
Taylor Smith who was touched for the Tiger run and two hits.
Kevin Galligan started for the Tigers and went three innings, giving
up four runs on four hits and five walks. He struck out eight. Peter
Keaney relieved and gave up two runs on four hits. He fanned four.
Taylor Smith was 3-for-4 for the Dodgers. Stewart had two hits and
drove in two with a double and a triple. Billy Anderson was 2-for-4.
In a majors game at Veira field on Tuesday, the Dodgers scored six
runs in the fifth inning to overtake the As and win 8-3.
Taylor Smith started on the hill for the Dodgers and went four innings
striking out five, allowing one hit, three walks, and three runs.
Ben Ciciora relieved and held the As scoreless.
Taylor Smith had two hits. Ramon Espino and Billy Anderson had clutch
rbi hits. Espino started a 4-3 double play.
T.J. Van Gerven started for the As, went three innings, keeping
the Dodgers off the scoreboard and striking out three. Oliver Filley
relieved and was charged with the loss, giving up 5 hits and 8 walks.
The As led 3-2 after four innings, but the Dodgers scored six
runs in the 5th to put the game on ice.
The minors
The Reds won their season opener with the Rockies, 3-0. Ian Bardwell
hurled the shutout, striking out 13.
Friday the Indians squeezed by the Rockies 6-5. Tony Canha started
for the Rockies and fanned nine in three innings. He was also 3-for-4
at the plate. Mike Mussell went five innings for the Tribe, striking
out 12. The score was tied at two after five innings. The Rockies
scored three times, taking a 5-2 lead. But in the bottom of the 6th,
a triple by Mussell, singles by Kyle Stobie and Carlos Guzman, and
another triple by John OShaughnessy pushed the winning runs
across the plate for the Indians.
Babe Ruth softball
Last years top teams, the Diamondbacks and the Yankees, opened
the season with a lopsided win by the Backs. Rookie Colette
Jordan drove in seven runs with a triple and a grand slam. The As
outlasted the Devil Rays, 27-21. Emma Forbes, Andrea Metell, Emily
Alosso, and Jackie Panek supplied most of the As punch. The
Rays enjoyed quality pitching from Jamie Forend and stellar defensive
play by Kia Minor and Lauren Williston.
The Braves were beaten by the As in a squeaker, 15-13, in the
final inning. Then the Braves got by the Yankees, 11-10 in a game
that required extra innings. Kim Montanile pitched seven solid innings
for the Yanks.

Girls lacrosse
The varsity girls lacrosse team took on a aggressive Dartmouth team,
Tuesday. Dartmouth scored twice before Isabelle Lew put the Vineyard
on the board. Darrtmouth finished the first period with a flurry of
seven goals, and led at the half 9-2.
The Vineyard held Dartmouth to two goals in the second half, and Jane
Alexander scored for the Vineyard. Final score: 11-3. Undefeated Dartmouth,
is first in the Maritime League. The Vineyard is second.
Friday, the Vineyard put it all together and beat Bourne 8-6. Ladies
from the canal scored the first goal, but Taylor MacDonald answered.
With another goal by MacDonald, two by Kerry ODonoghue, and
one by Katie Campbell, MV led at the half 5-3.
MacDonald was key on draw control and found Jane Alexander with a
perfect pass to start off the second half on a strong note. Katie
Keppeler and Katie Campbell were key assist players, moving the ball
downfield and finding teammate Meryl Pye, who scored. Bourne came
up with a goal, but it was quickly answered by Isabelle Lew. With
4 minutes left in the game, the Vineyard tried to hold the ball, but
Bourne managed to score twice. The Vineyard had a well deserved and
much needed win 8-6. Senior goalkeeper, Brie Sylvia played tough in
both halves with 12 saves. The Vineyard is now 3-1 in the Maritime
League and second behind Dartmouth. They are 3-4 overall.
Babe Ruth baseball
The three MV Babe Ruth baseball teams the Blue Jays, Cardinals,
and Twins play weekly in-house games Wednesdays and Thursdays
and weekend double headers off-Island with Cape teams.
Saturday at Bourne the MV Cardinals lost to the Bourne Mariners at
Keith Field, 7-1.
The Cards played well in the field but could not touch the Bourne
pitchers fastball. Jon Nelson doubled in the Cards only
run. Bournes Butler finished with 14Ks. JV hurler Joe Keaney
pitched with two days rest and gave up one run in two innings.
Lamar Moreis made the catch of the contest, over the head with his
back to the plate.
In the second game, the Cards had their way with the Bourne Cubs,
17-4.
Scoring early and often, the Cardinals got a boost from Tad Golds
two-run blast over the right field fence. Jon Nelson was 3-for-4 at
the plate. Steve Handys diving stop and throw from his knees
was the defensive gem. Brant Silva threw out two from right field.
Zach Countinho pitched three innings in the first game and came back
to finish the second.
VTS at Falmouth
The Vineyard Tennis Center sent a team to Falmouth last weekend for
the American Cancer Society fundraising tournament and came close
to dominating the event.
The Vineyard women made the finals in both divisions. Kelly Nagi and
Susie Safford won at division two, reaching the finals with two qualifying
wins and taking the championship round in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5.
Connie McHugh and Sue Kimball also made the finals. They played a
two and a half hour match, losing in a tie breaker.
Also in the first division, Nina Bramhall and Sally Lasker were eliminated
by the eventual winners, 6-2, 6-4.
Mas Kimball and Dave Larson represented the VTC in the mens
division.
Frosh & Sophs
The MVRHS freshmen and sophomores finished fourth in the Route 228
meet for underclassmen Saturday at Hingham. Some 50 schools entered.
Josh Jackson won the long jump with a leap of 18 9 3/4
and was second in the 200m dash. Jim Bishop placed second in the shot
put. Ry Yennie was second with the javelin and sixth in the 400.
The Vineyarders finished one point back of Sandwich. Whitman-Hanson
won the meet with 75.5 points.
Boys tennis
Always tough, Duxbury proved too much for the MV boys tennis team,
Friday, winning every match. Only Jamie Smadbeck, at second singles,
forced a third set, losing in a tie-breaker, 7-6.
The Vineyard singles players all won their matches easily in straight
sets with Sturgis, Monday, assuring the team of its fifth win against
four losses. The duo of Seth Seeman and Ben Gramkowski prevailed at
second doubles, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. Jonah Lipsky and Jeremy Meachem bowed,
6-4, 5-7, 6-1. |
