Tracking
and fielding
One hopes that it was a pleasant crossing for the Tri-County track
and field team, Thursday, because the track meet here offered them
sparse opportunities to cheer. Vineyarders won every event and ran
away with a 123-1 victory. The single point represents a third place
finish in the hurdles.
Both Lucas Brewer (long jump, 400m, and 100m) and Mitchell Moreis
(high jump, 300m low hurdlles, 100m high hurdles) won three events.
Mitch Robinson won both the 800m (in 2:06) and the mile (5:02).
Brewers time in the 400 (52.1) qualified him for the states.
Tuesday, Diman Voke presented more challenges but the Island teams
were too deep and too strong. The boys prevailed, 99-37 and the
girls, 96-40.
In winning the 800m at 2:02.1, Mitch Robinson broke one of the schools
oldest standing records, Tony Alleynes 2:03 set in 1970. Lucas
Brewer was a triple winner of the 400, 100, and javelin. Tim Luce
flew over the low and high hurdles best, leading Vineyard sweeps
in both events. MV also took all the points in the discus, long
jump, shot put, triple jump, and 400m. Vineyarders won 15 of the
16 events losing only the 4x100 relay.
Island girls were also dominant, although Diman won the 400m. 200m,
and 100m sprints, the long jump, the shot and tied Sarah Nevin,
clearing 4 8 in the high jump.
Morgan Ibarrondo led a Vineyard sweep of the triple jump and high
hurdles. Gwen Mayhew led the Ashleys Rebello and Medeiros
to the wire in the 800. Allison Flanders and Sagitta Woodman
were 1-2 at the mile. Alice Hopkins, Ashley Medeiros, and Allison
Flanders won all the points in the discus. Gen Flanders and Nica
Sylvia were 1-2 at two miles.
MV won both relays.

Lacrosse
The
MVRHS varsity lacrosse team edged Nauset at North Eastham, Tuesday,
10-9, in a game that was close all the way. The score was 6-5 with
Nauset up at the half and tied, 8-8, after three quarters. Coach Peer
Ferrini lauded the play of Edison Parzanese who scored once and assisted
six times. Goalie Marc Levesque made key saves, especially late in
the game to keep the Islanders close. Both Mike Giordano and Tim Scott
had hat tricks.
It was no contest Friday versus New Bedford. MV scored 18 points to
New Bedfords one.
The Islanders are 8-5 overall, 8-1 in the Maritime league, second
to Nantucket which is unbeaten in league play.
