Girls lacrosse

In the first half of their game at New Bedford, Friday, the MV girls played catch-up, responding to three Whaling City goals before taking the lead, 4-3, on a goal by Taylor MacDonald just six seconds before the break . Jane Alexander, Kerry O’Donoghue, and Isabelle Lew garnered the first three MV points.

MacDonald made it 5-3 20 seconds into the second period. Then the New Bedford girls scored three unanswered goals to retake the lead, 6-5. But that was it as the Islanders found a groove and scored seven times in a row to claim a 12-6 victory.

Goalie Brie Sylvia made 12 saves.

At Marshfield on Monday, the Islanders scored first and often enough to bring home a 12-8 win. Kayla Leonard and Taylor MacDonald had hat tricks and Meryl Pye scored twice, Also scoring: Jenny Stone, Jane Alexander, Kerry O’Donoghue, and Katie Campbell.

Meg Leland and Alaina Aristide played solid defense.

The girls are even on the season, 5-5.

Jayvees

New Bedford’s junior varsity squeaked by the Vineyard jayvees, 3-2, Friday. MV scorers were Grace Murphy and Tiffany Smalley.

Monday the jayvees slogged through a wet field at Marshfield to a 13-8 win. Scorers were Tiffany Smalley (2), Grace Murphy (4), Kate Mederios (2), Celeste Glavin (2), Whitney Swolinsky, and Amanda Cavanaugh. Evan Kavanagh was strong in goal, shielded by Marguerite Hegarty.

Falmouth didn’t cut it

The Cutting Edge men’s ice hockey team was the Vineyard’s successful entry in the Open Division tournament at the Falmouth rink in April.

The Islanders won their first two games over Cape opponents, 7-2 and 6-5. Matt Crowther and Kevin Hatt both scored twice in the tourney opener. Joe Fiedler (2), Joe Peters, Robbie Searle, Chip Story and Richard Sykora did the damage in the second game.

John Fiorito, Luke Guernsey, and John Chandler were non-scoring keys to the Cutting Edge success.

Thursday, April 28, the Cutting Edge faced off with the host Falmouth team, also unbeaten in the tourney. The game was appropriately close and spirited. A Falmouth goal with 17 seconds on the clock gave the nod to the home town squad, 4-3. Ronnie Jackson, Mark Smith, and Alex Fiedler scored for Cutting Edge.

The same two teams met the following night in the Open Division finale playing for the championship. This time the Vineyarders broke open what had been a close game late in the middle period and stormed to a 9-3 win. Kevin Hatt led all scorers with a hat trick. Also scoring were Billy Jackson, Matt Mara, Jevon Rigo, Alex Fiedler, Joe Peters, and Rich Sykora,

Chuck Silvia was strong in goal turning aside not a few quality shots.

The trophy now adorns the trophy case at the MV Arena.

Matte is Champ

Twelve-year-old Matte Horton of Oak Bluffs became the state’s level 6 gymnastics champion at Marstons Mills, Saturday, at a meet hosted by Cape Cod Gymnastics of Dennis.

Matte is the first Island girls gymnastics state champ.

She was first on the beam and the bars, second on floor, and seventh in the vault.

Her 36.6 all-around score was a personal best.

The following day, MV’s level four girls shone.

Lexi Willett, 9, of Chilmark was 7th all-around and Sarah Alexander, 9, of West Tisbury was right behind in 8th.

Zana Van Rooyen, 8, of Tisbury was 12th.

LL Majors

The Dodgers battery, Ben Ciciora and William Stewart, held the Tigers to two runs on four hits, striking out 12 and walking two at Veira Park on Thursday, remaining unbeaten at 4-0. The Tigers used three pitchers: Jock Cooperrider, Stuart Hersh, and Peter Keaney. Together they fanned seven, walked 10, and gave up seven hits, including a fence-clearing solo homer by Ciciora leading off the bottom of the fourth.

The Tigers scored their two runs in the top of the sixth. After Hersh and Keaney walked, Cooperrider’s single loaded the bases. James Bagnall’s single into left drove in Hersh and Keaney.

Tuesday, at Nunes, the Dodgers beat the Tigers behind the same battery, 6-1.Taylor Smith was 3-for-4, William Stewart 2-for-3, including a double and a triple, and Billy Anderson had two hits with an rbi.

Peter Keaney’s fifth-inning double drove in Devin Gallaghan with the Tigers run. The Cubs and A’s split their games. The A’s shut out the Cubs, 5-0, Wednesday. Alec Tattersall and Del Araujo combined for a no-hitter, but errors lead to A’s runs. T.J. Van Gervin shut out the Cubs with one hit — by Evan Sosa. But Friday the Cubs played long ball and dropped the A’s, 9-6. Sosa had an inside-the-park home run and a triple. Brian Hurley and Jack Roberts hit back-to-back doubles. Alec Tattersall’s triple reached the fence in left.

One up, one down for netmen

At Barnstable, Tuesday, the MVRHS boys tennis team lost a cliffhanger to the Red Raiders, always a top team on the Cape, 3-2. After Pat Smadbeck won 6-1, 6-2 at first singles and Nick Wallen lost, 5-4, 6-0 at third, attention focused on Jamie Smadbeck’s second singles duel with Chris Leveroni. Chris won the first set 6-4. Jamie evened the count with a tie-beaker in the second, 7-6, and then took the third, 6-4. MV needed a win at doubles and almost got it. Tim McHugh and Jeremy Meacham lost the first set, 3-6, then returned the compliment taking the second, 6-3. The all-important third set went down to the wire before the Raider duo won, 7-5.

At Chatham, Thursday, all Island singles players won convincingly and the purple took the match, 4-1.

The MV boys record is 6-5.

Girls tennis

After sweeping Sturgis, the Island girls won their sixth match versus Chatham. The unbeaten Blue Devils’ first and second singles players kept their records clean, but once-beaten Katherine Clark (6-1) prevailed at third singles and the MV doubles teams of Lauren Franklin and Laura Kimball and Christine Ronan and Antonia Hickey won handily in straight sets.

The Vineyarders were swept by powerhouse Barnstable at Hyannis, 5-0, without winning a set. MV is 7-5 on the year, Barnstable is 13-1.

Coach Hutchinson says the girls look forward to their upcoming matches with Bourne and Sandwich, teams that each beat them 3-2 early in the season.

Annual round robin

The boys tennis team will host an annual round robin tennis tournament at the Edgartown Yacht Club courts on Pease Point Way, Saturday, May 21, from 2 to 5 pm. Two more by one run

The high school varsity baseball team fell to Provincetown Friday at the Fishermen’s field, 5-4, then failed to hit and score, Monday, versus Greater New Bedford Voke, wasting a one-run, seven-strikeout, seven-inning pitching job by Matt Kurth.

On Tuesday, sick and tired of losing games by single runs — they’ve lost six of them, some in extra innings — the Vineyarders jumped on Nantucket pitchers, scoring seven runs in the last two innings to claim an 11-4 win for Jacques Penicaud, who fanned a dozen Whalers.

Jordan Hoehn was 3-for-5, Simon Goldberg 2-for-5, and Eric Herman 2-for-2 for the Islanders.

Darting is done

Appropriately, Tim Fullin and friends — Joe Andrade, Cindy Greiser, Peter Searle — took home the money May 5, the last evening of the MV Dart league season. The same team of worthies finished the season in first place, followed by Dave Bettencourt, Kurt Tesch, Laurie Maciel, and Peter Valentzas.

In third place were Steve Maciel, Dave O’Sullivan, Mike Lipinsky, and Tim Corner.

The Yankees won their first game of the year, edging the Rays, 12-11. Emily Sobel and Martha Scheffer had multiple hits for the Rays. Molly Ciciora had two hits for the Yanks. Defense made the difference late in the game as Yankee catcher Amira Madison threw out Sobel at second and Elizabeth Reid snagged a line drive in center with two in scoring position.

Bob Allietta, Steve Allietta, Gary Kozens, and Joe Fereira were the winning foursome with a 13 under par team score at the 4th annual Look, Dolby, Rebello Scholarship Fund golf tournament at Farm Neck on Wednesday, May 4.

The Steamship Authority tourney is named for three young men who died before their time and this year was played in memory of Christian Manley. Some $8,000 was raised for the scholarship fund.

Chatham's Maria Montague is safe at second in a close play. The MV shortstop is Kathryn DeBettencourt.
Varsity softball

The Vineyarders overcame a 2-0 deficit to edge visiting Nantucket, Tuesday, 3-2. The Whalers opened the meeting with a lead-off triple by Aislinn Duggan who scored when Kelly Fredericks singled. Nantucket added a second run in the second inning.

After that Brielle Leonard was untouchable, while the Vineyarders began their charge. Julie Perry scored in the bottom of the second, driven in by Nicole Perry. Julie scored again in the fourth, taking advantage of Whaler miscues. Kathryn DeBettencourt drove in Brittany Stone with the winning run in the seventh.

Friday, Kathryn DeBettencourt doubled and tripled and drove in two. Catcher Kelly Silvia threw out two Chatham baserunners trying to steal and had two hits. Brielle Leonard struck out 13 Blue Devils, going the distance in the 6-5 win here.

MV’s record stands at 7-5.
