Girls
lacrosse
In the first half of their game at New Bedford, Friday, the MV girls
played catch-up, responding to three Whaling City goals before taking
the lead, 4-3, on a goal by Taylor MacDonald just six seconds before
the break . Jane Alexander, Kerry ODonoghue, and Isabelle Lew
garnered the first three MV points.
MacDonald made it 5-3 20 seconds into the second period. Then the
New Bedford girls scored three unanswered goals to retake the lead,
6-5. But that was it as the Islanders found a groove and scored seven
times in a row to claim a 12-6 victory.
Goalie Brie Sylvia made 12 saves.
At Marshfield on Monday, the Islanders scored first and often enough
to bring home a 12-8 win. Kayla Leonard and Taylor MacDonald had hat
tricks and Meryl Pye scored twice, Also scoring: Jenny Stone, Jane
Alexander, Kerry ODonoghue, and Katie Campbell.
Meg Leland and Alaina Aristide played solid defense.
The girls are even on the season, 5-5.
Jayvees
New Bedfords junior varsity squeaked by the Vineyard jayvees,
3-2, Friday. MV scorers were Grace Murphy and Tiffany Smalley.
Monday the jayvees slogged through a wet field at Marshfield to a
13-8 win. Scorers were Tiffany Smalley (2), Grace Murphy (4), Kate
Mederios (2), Celeste Glavin (2), Whitney Swolinsky, and Amanda Cavanaugh.
Evan Kavanagh was strong in goal, shielded by Marguerite Hegarty.
Falmouth didnt cut it
The Cutting Edge mens ice hockey team was the Vineyards
successful entry in the Open Division tournament at the Falmouth rink
in April.
The Islanders won their first two games over Cape opponents, 7-2 and
6-5. Matt Crowther and Kevin Hatt both scored twice in the tourney
opener. Joe Fiedler (2), Joe Peters, Robbie Searle, Chip Story and
Richard Sykora did the damage in the second game.
John Fiorito, Luke Guernsey, and John Chandler were non-scoring keys
to the Cutting Edge success.
Thursday, April 28, the Cutting Edge faced off with the host Falmouth
team, also unbeaten in the tourney. The game was appropriately close
and spirited. A Falmouth goal with 17 seconds on the clock gave the
nod to the home town squad, 4-3. Ronnie Jackson, Mark Smith, and Alex
Fiedler scored for Cutting Edge.
The same two teams met the following night in the Open Division finale
playing for the championship. This time the Vineyarders broke open
what had been a close game late in the middle period and stormed to
a 9-3 win. Kevin Hatt led all scorers with a hat trick. Also scoring
were Billy Jackson, Matt Mara, Jevon Rigo, Alex Fiedler, Joe Peters,
and Rich Sykora,
Chuck Silvia was strong in goal turning aside not a few quality shots.
The trophy now adorns the trophy case at the MV Arena.
Matte is Champ
Twelve-year-old Matte Horton of Oak Bluffs became the states
level 6 gymnastics champion at Marstons Mills, Saturday, at a meet
hosted by Cape Cod Gymnastics of Dennis.
Matte is the first Island girls gymnastics state champ.
She was first on the beam and the bars, second on floor, and seventh
in the vault.
Her 36.6 all-around score was a personal best.
The following day, MVs level four girls shone.
Lexi Willett, 9, of Chilmark was 7th all-around and Sarah Alexander,
9, of West Tisbury was right behind in 8th.
Zana Van Rooyen, 8, of Tisbury was 12th.
Heather Good, 8, of Oak Bluffs was fourth on the beam.
LL Majors
The Dodgers battery, Ben Ciciora and William Stewart, held the Tigers
to two runs on four hits, striking out 12 and walking two at Veira
Park on Thursday, remaining unbeaten at 4-0. The Tigers used three
pitchers: Jock Cooperrider, Stuart Hersh, and Peter Keaney. Together
they fanned seven, walked 10, and gave up seven hits, including a
fence-clearing solo homer by Ciciora leading off the bottom of the
fourth.
The Tigers scored their two runs in the top of the sixth. After Hersh
and Keaney walked, Cooperriders single loaded the bases. James
Bagnalls single into left drove in Hersh and Keaney.
Tuesday, at Nunes, the Dodgers beat the Tigers behind the same battery,
6-1.Taylor Smith was 3-for-4, William Stewart 2-for-3, including a
double and a triple, and Billy Anderson had two hits with an rbi.
Peter Keaneys fifth-inning double drove in Devin Gallaghan with
the Tigers run. The Cubs and As split their games. The As
shut out the Cubs, 5-0, Wednesday. Alec Tattersall and Del Araujo
combined for a no-hitter, but errors lead to As runs. T.J. Van
Gervin shut out the Cubs with one hit by Evan Sosa. But Friday
the Cubs played long ball and dropped the As, 9-6. Sosa had
an inside-the-park home run and a triple. Brian Hurley and Jack Roberts
hit back-to-back doubles. Alec Tattersalls triple reached the
fence in left.
One up, one down for netmen
At Barnstable, Tuesday, the MVRHS boys tennis team lost a cliffhanger
to the Red Raiders, always a top team on the Cape, 3-2. After Pat
Smadbeck won 6-1, 6-2 at first singles and Nick Wallen lost, 5-4,
6-0 at third, attention focused on Jamie Smadbecks second singles
duel with Chris Leveroni. Chris won the first set 6-4. Jamie evened
the count with a tie-beaker in the second, 7-6, and then took the
third, 6-4. MV needed a win at doubles and almost got it. Tim McHugh
and Jeremy Meacham lost the first set, 3-6, then returned the compliment
taking the second, 6-3. The all-important third set went down to the
wire before the Raider duo won, 7-5.
At Chatham, Thursday, all Island singles players won convincingly
and the purple took the match, 4-1.
The MV boys record is 6-5.
Girls tennis
After sweeping Sturgis, the Island girls won their sixth match versus
Chatham. The unbeaten Blue Devils first and second singles players
kept their records clean, but once-beaten Katherine Clark (6-1) prevailed
at third singles and the MV doubles teams of Lauren Franklin and Laura
Kimball and Christine Ronan and Antonia Hickey won handily in straight
sets.
The Vineyarders were swept by powerhouse Barnstable at Hyannis, 5-0,
without winning a set. MV is 7-5 on the year, Barnstable is 13-1.
Coach Hutchinson says the girls look forward to their upcoming matches
with Bourne and Sandwich, teams that each beat them 3-2 early in the
season.
Annual round robin
The boys tennis team will host an annual round robin tennis tournament
at the Edgartown Yacht Club courts on Pease Point Way, Saturday, May
21, from 2 to 5 pm. Entry fee of $50 includes gourmet hors doeuvres,
drinks, and door prizes. All proceeds go toward the purchase of uniforms
and equipment. Donations to MVRHS District Tennis Boosters, sent to
Diane Smadbeck, RR1 Box 65-A-3 Edgartown are welcome. Call Connie

The LL Minors
The Reds have staked an early claim to the minor league flag with
convincing wins over the Rockies, 3-0, Orioles, 11-2, Twins, 13-3,
and the Rockies again, 4-2.
The Indians are tracking the leaders. They lost a 3-1 decision to
the Reds, Wednesday, then climbed back on the winning road Friday
versus the Orioles, 6-1,

Two more by one run
The high school varsity baseball team fell to Provincetown Friday
at the Fishermens field, 5-4, then failed to hit and score,
Monday, versus Greater New Bedford Voke, wasting a one-run, seven-strikeout,
seven-inning pitching job by Matt Kurth.
On Tuesday, sick and tired of losing games by single runs theyve
lost six of them, some in extra innings the Vineyarders jumped
on Nantucket pitchers, scoring seven runs in the last two innings
to claim an 11-4 win for Jacques Penicaud, who fanned a dozen Whalers.
Jordan Hoehn was 3-for-5, Simon Goldberg 2-for-5, and Eric Herman
2-for-2 for the Islanders.
Darting is done
Appropriately, Tim Fullin and friends Joe Andrade, Cindy Greiser,
Peter Searle took home the money May 5, the last evening of
the MV Dart league season. The same team of worthies finished the
season in first place, followed by Dave Bettencourt, Kurt Tesch, Laurie
Maciel, and Peter Valentzas.
In third place were Steve Maciel, Dave OSullivan, Mike Lipinsky,
and Tim Corner.
Cindy Greisser won the most singles: 11.
Dave Bettencourt had the most tons: 41
Wayne George hit the only ton-80.
The high 3-dart-on was Tim Fullins (152).
The high 3-dart-out belonged to Peter Searle (117).
Joe Andrade hit the only round-of-nine.
Babe Ruth softball
Lauren Metell went 3-for-4, including a grand slam in the As
defeat of the Yankees. Emma Forbes, Emma Frizzell, Emily Alosso and
Julie Perry each had three hits for the As.
The Braves dropped the Devil Rays, 14-6. Caroline Davey went the distance
on the mound for the Tribe.
The Yankees won their first game of the year, edging the Rays, 12-11.
Emily Sobel and Martha Scheffer had multiple hits for the Rays. Molly
Ciciora had two hits for the Yanks. Defense made the difference late
in the game as Yankee catcher Amira Madison threw out Sobel at second
and Elizabeth Reid snagged a line drive in center with two in scoring
position.

In the Babe Ruth softball lower league, the Phillies crunched the
Dodgers, 20-4, enjoying home runs by Kendall Robinson and K.J. Johnson,
whose blast was a grand slam.
The following week, the Phillies kept on rolling, this time over the
Orioles, 14-3.

SSA Tourney
at the Neck
Bob Allietta, Steve Allietta, Gary Kozens, and Joe Fereira were the
winning foursome with a 13 under par team score at the 4th annual
Look, Dolby, Rebello Scholarship Fund golf tournament at Farm Neck
on Wednesday, May 4.
The Steamship Authority tourney is named for three young men who died
before their time and this year was played in memory of Christian
Manley. Some $8,000 was raised for the scholarship fund.

Chatham's Maria Montague is safe at second in a close play.
The MV shortstop is Kathryn DeBettencourt.

Varsity softball
The Vineyarders overcame a 2-0 deficit to edge visiting Nantucket,
Tuesday, 3-2. The Whalers opened the meeting with a lead-off triple
by Aislinn Duggan who scored when Kelly Fredericks singled. Nantucket
added a second run in the second inning.
After that Brielle Leonard was untouchable, while the Vineyarders
began their charge. Julie Perry scored in the bottom of the second,
driven in by Nicole Perry. Julie scored again in the fourth, taking
advantage of Whaler miscues. Kathryn DeBettencourt drove in Brittany
Stone with the winning run in the seventh.
Friday, Kathryn DeBettencourt doubled and tripled and drove in two.
Catcher Kelly Silvia threw out two Chatham baserunners trying to steal
and had two hits. Brielle Leonard struck out 13 Blue Devils, going
the distance in the 6-5 win here.
MVs record stands at 7-5.
