Sandwich and Bourne again

The Vineyard varsity girls lacrosse team had a second go at Sandwich, Wednesday, a team that had previously beaten them 10-3 on the Blue Knight’s turf.

It was a different story this time.

Taylor MacDonald started the scoring a minute and a half into the game and the Islanders led by as much as four, 7-3, midway through the period. But Sandwich rallied and at the half MV held a slim 8-7 advantage.

But the second half belonged to the Vineyard. MacDonald scored three of five unanswered goals.

Sandwich managed one more before the game ended with MV on top, 13-8.

Brie Sylvia made 12 saves in goal.

Friday’s game with Nauset wasn’t really a laugher, but it wasn’t a challenge either. Alaina Aristide (4) and Naomi Rayfield (3) led the parade to the Nauset net. The final count was 14-4.

Monday’s meeting with Bourne was something else. The ladies of the Canal broke on top and led at the half, 7-4. With 20 minutes left in the game their advantage had grown to 10-6.

In the time remaining, MV engineered two four goal runs to catch and pass their hosts 14-12.

Coach Betsy Dripps had high praise for defender Meg Leland who covered Bourne’s top scorer and kept her in check. Taylor MacDonald had four goals and an assist. Kayla Leonard, Isabelle Lew, and Katie Campbell each had three. Jenny Stone and Meryl Pye also scored.

It was the Vineyard’s fifth straight win, placing them securely in second place in the Maritime League behind Dartmouth. MV takes its 8-6 record to tough Norwell today and flies to Nantucket, Friday.

Jayvee jottings

The MV junior varsity squeezed by Bourne, Monday, 10-9. The game was tied at the half, 5-5. Tiffany Smalley and Celesta Glavin had hat tricks. Also scoring were Amanda Cavanaugh, Claire Lindsey, and Whitney Swolinsky.

Last Wednesday, the girls lost to Bourne, 11-6. Smalley, Glavin, and Grace Murphy all tallied twice.

Collared by a Cardinal

Ashley Bernstein hurled a one-hit shutout at the MVRHS softball team, here on Saturday, fanning twelve. Only Julie Perry’s line drive single in the fifth inning spoiled the Cardinal Spellman ace’s bid for a perfect game. The Cards won, 7-0.

At Sandwich, Friday, Sandwich beat the Islanders 5-1. Brittany Stone scored the Vineyard’s run in the fifth inning. After smashing a triple, she rode home on Brielle Leonard’s single.

Monday, the Islanders scored seven times in the fifth inning and topped Harwich, here, 8-6. Loudest blow of the day was Brielle Leonard’s triple that drove in two in the big fifth.

The Vineyard girls are 9-7 on the year, one win away from a postseason berth.

Ahoy

As of this date, the Vineyard sail racing team is ranked 11th in New England, their highest ranking to date and a considerable accomplishment since there are some 80 ranked schools.

The Islanders will be host to the New England Championship regatta at the Vineyard Haven Yacht Club, Saturday and Sunday. The top eight New England teams that will vie for the Mark Trophy are: (1) St. George’s (2) Tabor Academy (3) Portsmouth Abbey (4) Hotchkiss (5) Dartmouth High School (6) Buckingham, Browne & Nichols (7) Milton Academy (8) Greenwich High School.

Bishop Stang and B.C. High are the other teams ranked before MV.

The Islanders are 11-5 on the year, with four more dual meets and the June 4 Cape & Island League regatta to go.

Jayvees win

The MVRHS junior varsity baseball nine wore out the basepaths at Nantucket, winning the game by the football score of 21-0. Monday they edged Harwich, 4-3 behind Max Shay who fanned 10. Matt Seklecki’s double and Joe Keaney’s two rbi single were the offensive high lights.

New face on old fields

Four hundred tons of blue stonedust arrived by barge at Packer’s dock, Tisbury, to be trucked by volunteers to Manter’s Field and the school field in West Tisbury, the two softball fields at Tisbury’s Veterans Park, and the OB school field.

Balls and strikes

The Phillies of the girls lower softball league had a great week, beating the Orioles, Tuesday, 14-1, then getting by the O’s again, Friday, under the lights at Tisbury, 11-10, and finally tying the Red Sox, 12-12…. In the baseball minor league the Reds ran up an 18-1 win against the Indians behind the hurling of Colin Cameron and Eric Pezanowski. Charlotte Lowell-Betencourt got her first hit for the Tribe. Matte Long was 4-for-5 for the Birds and homered in the sixth. Joe Tripp also hit a round-tripper…. The Reds continued winning, Monday, topping the Twins, 14-8. The big blast was Joe Tripp’s triple in the 5th. Also Monday, the Orioles edged he Rockies, 10-8, despite a grand slam by David Cartier for the Rocks.

Babe Ruth Baseball

The MV Twins won a double-header at Bourne’s Keith Field, Saturday, drubbing the Bourne Dodgers, 12-0, in the morning game, then they trounced the Bourne Athletics, 19-4, in the twin bill.

Zach Coutinho and Will Inman combined to shut out the Dodgers. Nick Cuba was 2 for 2 at the plate. Coutinho helped his cause with a 2-rbi single.

Joe Keaney started and went four innings against the A’s, allowing no earned runs. Albion Alley was 2 for 4 with two rbi and two steals. Oliver Osnoss was 2 for 3 and scored twice. Catcher Scott Cleary had a base-clearing double, Mike Kendall went 1 for 3 and ended the game with a nifty running catch.

On Island, the Blue Jays rallied from five down to edge the Cardinals, 8-7. The Jays played small ball in the fifth and scored six runs on a series of walks, stolen bases, and timely hits to take a 6-5 lead that they made hold up. Final score: Jays 8, Cards 7.
