A flourishing finish

Winning seven of their last eight games, Coach Betsy Dripps’s girls varsity lacrosse team peaked at the right time and has swept into the MIAA post-season tournament.

Friday they flew to Nantucket and returned with a 12-8 win. Katie Campbell produced five of the MV dozen. (She had a sixth but it was disallowed when her stick’s pocket was found to be too deep.) Jane Alexander had a hat trick and Isabelle Lew scored twice. Meryl Pye and Taylor MacDonald also scored and Alaina Aristide had two key assists.

Monday found the Islanders in Hyannis, playing on an ugly, cold, soggy and rain-swept field versus Barnstable. The Vineyard struck first but at the half the game was tied, 5-5. MV took advantage of two free position opportunities to outscore the Raiders in the second half and win the game, 11-9. Seven Islanders scored, none more than Taylor MacDonald who had a hat trick.

Alaina Aristide was outstanding on ground ball control and MacDonald consistently won the draws.

The Vineyard’s final scheduled game is with Nantucket, here, which must be played no later than today. The MIAA is due to announce tourney seedings tomorrow.

Hat tricks by Tiffany Smalley and Celeste Glavin powered the junior varsity to a 10-9 win over Bourne at Bourne, Monday. Also scoring were Whitney Swolinsky (2), Claire Lindsey, and Amanda Cavanaugh. Marguerite Hegarty was the winning goalie.
