Topmost tars

The MVRHS sailing team won the Cape & Island League championship in Pleasant Bay, at the Chatham Yacht Club, Saturday, nosing out Nauset and Bishop Stang for top honors.

In the A division, sophomore Ellery Whitworth and freshman Emily Reich posted three first and three second place finishes for a leading score of nine. Nauset came next with 15.

Three skippers and crews sailed for Coach Doug Heil’s team in the B division: Elise Swartwood and Celeste Bailey, Will Felder and Amanda Brown. and Tristan Lodge also with Amanda Brown. The Vineyarders struggled but recovered and posted a first and a second in the final two races to retake the lead and pull out the win, claiming the regatta and the league championship with a final score of 31.

Following the Vineyarders were (2) Nauset, 33 (3) Bp. Stang, 39 (4) Nantucket, 44 (5) Chatham, 59 (6) Sandwich, 61 (7) Harwich, 71.

MV ended the season with a 13-6 record. They were 10th in New England in fleet racing and 11th in New England in team racing.

It”s a young team with almost all returning next year, Coach Heil is eagerly optimistic about the 2006 season.

Scramble in the Meadow

The winning foursome in the Memorial Day Scramble at Mink Meadows was Rusty Hitchings, Bob Tonti, Steve Dretler, and Woody Forns with a score of 65.

Doug Dowling, Ken Walker, Bob Hope, and Cathy Forns also carded a 65. After matching cards with the Hitchings four, the Dowling team was declared runners-up.

A similar tie-breaker was needed to decide third and fourth places as Dick Stone, Dan McCarthy, Pat Gregory, and Elliot Kronstein had the same 66 count as Craig Sexton, Kim Hamilton, Sandy Shapiro, and Rita Bean. The Stone foursome was third.

Longest drives from the 10th tee were by Liz Huss and John Rancourt. Drives closest to the pin on the 7th hole were by Liz Huss and Ken Walker.

By all accounts, the 11th annual Children”s Benefit golf tournament was as delightful as the weather at Farm Neck, Sunday.

Just behind at 54.2 were Bob Camara, John Rancourt, Friend Weiler, Michael Levandowski, and Paul Watts.

Unbeaten Dodgers roll

In the Little League majors, the undefeated Dodgers kept their escutcheon pristine shutting out the A’s, Tuesday, at Veira Park, 3-0, then dropping the Red Sox with one hit the next day at Nunes. William Stewart and Ben Ciciora combined for the Tuesday one-hit shutout and contributed two hits apiece, scoring and driving in two of the Dodgers” runs. Only one error was committed in the well-played game.

On Wednesday, Stewart, Chris Morris, and Taylor Smith hurled a one-hit, one-run game at the Red Sox. Ciciora was 3-for-3 at the plate and scored three times. Stewart had two doubles and three RBI. Smith and Billy Anderson hit safely twice.

Nine of the Dodgers 10 hits came from the 2 through 5 batters.

Lax

The MVRHS boys lacrosse team, seeded 9th in MIAA Division 3 East, defeated 8th seeded Northeastern Metro Regional at Wakefield, Thursday, 12-10. It was only the second loss of the year for NE Metro, who finished with a 15-2 record.

The Islanders led at the half, 6-3, and held a slim 9-8 lead after three quarters, but had to overcome an 8-9 deficit to pull out the win late in the fourth quarter.

Tim Scott (4), Taylor Pierce (3) and Edison Parzanese (3) did most of the damage. Riley Dobel and Mike Giordano also scored.

Tuesday the Islanders took on top-seeded Medfield at Medfield. Edison Parzanese scored twice and Tim Scott once, but the game clearly belonged to Medfield, 28-3.

The Islanders finished the season with a 14-8 record. It was Medfield”s 20th win against two losses.

Raqueteers stopped

The 23rd-seeded MV boys tennis team lost its match at Cohasset, the 10th seed in MIAA Division 2 South, Wednesday, 2-3, ending its post-season play.

Jamie Smadbeck reigned at second singles, 6-1,6-0, and Tim McHugh dominated at third singles, 6-2, 6-0.

According to Coach Fennessy, Patrick Smadbeck played “smart tennis” against Cohasset’s hard-hitting Nils Sceery, losing the first set in a tough tie-beaker and the second set, 6-2.

Daniel Han and Timo Nivala played better than the 6-2, 6-1 score would indicate before losing at second doubles.

That left the match in the hands of Jeremy Meachem and Nick Wallen at first doubles. The Islanders won the first set, 6-4, but Cohasset took the next two, 6-4, 6-3, to claim the match and end the Vineyard’s season with a record of 9-8.

Rays sting A’s

In a Babe Ruth softball week, abridged by junior high class trips, the Devil Rays surprised the Athletics with a plethora of hits and runs, 33-17.

The A’s tried four pitchers to quiet Rays bats but nothing worked. Martha Scheffer, Seneca Craig, Jenna Lambert, and Rachel Cassiani provided much of the Devilish damage.

In what must be a record, Caitlin Cassiani hit two home runs in the same inning to pace the league leading A’s past the improving Yanks, 21-14. Katie Mahoney had four hits for the A’s. Julie Perry was credited with the win.

The Braves dropped the Yankees behind Caroline Davey”s two-run hurling. Hannah Marlin, Julie Pringle, and Jillian Sedlier shone for the Braves. Jasmine Waffer, Kim Montanile, and Molly Ciciora were strong for the Yanks.

Babe Ruth standings

Summer sails beckon

The Holmes Hole Sailing Assn.(HHSA), founded in 1970, begins its series of 23 summer races with a race in Vineyard or Nantucket Sound, Sunday, June 19.

Harbor, Sound and Rendezvous races will be held Sundays, and Thursday evening races will be held in Vineyard Haven Harbor beginning June 30.

The HHSA will miss Bob Blum, a stalwart member and fierce competitor. He was voted HHSA sailor of the year twice and was a winner of the season ending Moffett Race.

HHSA actively seeks new participants. Any interested captain of a single hull sailing vessel is encouraged to call Anne Good at 508-693-6429.

The association invites you to enter your boat, get a handicap, and have great fun on some of the most interesting sailing waters to be found anywhere.

Chip off the old block

Dropping birdies on the last two holes, Chris Menne, 22, joined his father, Allan, as a qualifier for the Mass. Open golf tournament with a round of 77 at the Framingham Country Club. Allen had qualified earlier with a 74 at Halifax.

Three stars

Three MVRHS girls lacrosse players were named to the Maritime League’s all-star squad: Seniors Isabelle Lew and Meg Leland, and junior Taylor MacDonald. Isabelle and Taylor were the team’s leading scorers and Meg was key to the team”s defense.
