Little League all-stars lose, win

The Bridgewater Little Leaguers took advantage of four MV errors in the first inning to score three runs, more than they would need and all the runs that would be scored in the game, last Thursday at Veira Park.

MV pitcher Ben Ciciora deserved a better fate. He gave up six hits and one base on balls and struck out six batters. None of the runs were earned.

Bridgewater’s pitcher was even less generous, allowing just three Vineyard hits — a lead-off single by Andrew Williamson and two hits by Jock Cooperrider.

Tuesday, also at Veira, the MV all-stars dropped Brockton South, 8-3, behind William Stewart, who gave up two runs on two hits and two walks in the first inning, then sailed through the next three innings, facing just three batters in each. He was a little wild in the fifth, walking two and giving up a hit and another run, but that was it. He finished with 8 K’s and 5 walks, giving up 3 hits and 3 runs, but he was never in serious trouble.

The Island offense did most of its damage in the first two innings.

Andrew Williamson led off, again, with a line drive single into center. Taylor Smith drew a base on balls. Peter Keaney “took one for the team” and the bases were loaded for Ben Ciciora. The Brockton pitcher uncorked some wild pitches and Williamson and Smith scored, Keaney advancing to third. Ciciora reached when his grounder was misplayed at second and Keaney scored on the play with the Vineyard’s third run. William Stewart was next and he helped his cause with a double, driving in Ciciora. After Colby Gouldrup bounced out to third, Kevin Galligan singled, the Vineyard’s fourth hit of the inning. With two on, Nick Nelson went down swinging, and Williamson, up for the second time, popped out to short.

In the second inning, four straight hits by Smith, Keaney, Ciciora, and Stewart produced two runs. It might have been more, but Ciciora, showing some impatience, was thrown out trying to steal third.

The Vineyarders scored one more run in the fifth. Max Berlow reached when his nubber was misplayed by the Brockton catcher. Max advanced to third on passed balls and came home on Williamson’s bouncer to third.

Ben Ciciora was 3-for-4 and was thrown out twice trying to steal. William Stewart was 2-for-3 with a walk. Both Taylor Smith and Peter Keaney scored twice.

Still in the hunt for a ticket to Williamsport, the Islanders, 2-1, play Carver today at Sandwich.

As well as runners there were those who walked the five-mile course. Rewarded with medals and certificates for fudge are (left to right) walkers Allison Joseph, 9, Emma McMahon, 10, and Nikki Joseph, 11.
Garden State man wins the Murdick's 5-miler

Brian Harshman, 42, of Hamilton Square, N.J., won the annual Murdick’s Fudge five-mile run-the-chop road race, Saturday, in 27:29. Harshman finished more than a minute and a half ahead of Joe Cresko, 39, of Bethlehem, Pa., who was second, but 12 seconds slower than last year’s winner, Joshua Sohn, and nowhere near his own 1999 winning mark of 25:53.

It was hot and muggy, hardly the kind of conditions that distance runners prefer, but 176 runners completed the course, exactly the same number that finished the run last year.

Setting sail with the HHSA

By John Amabile

The Holmes Hole Sailing Association commenced its Thursday evening series of handicap sailboat racing from Vineyard Haven harbor with a 6 pm race on June 30. It was a muggy evening with a moderate southwest wind of five to eight knots. Seven boats posted for the start at red nun 6 outside of the Vineyard Haven breakwater. A triangular course was set from nun 6 to red nun 4 at West Chop, then to green can 23A at East Chop, and finishing back at nun 6. The boats ran downwind to nun 4, sailed a beam reach on the starboard tack to the green can, and beat to windward to the finish line. Finishing first was Ernie Mendenhall in the Tartan sloop Rocinante III. In second was Frank Jewett in his Soling, Andiamo II. In third was Dan Pesch in the Gannon and Benjamin sloop Sparrow. Fourth was Mike Oliveira in Bora, fifth was Paul Young-Hyman in Eclipse, sixth was Dan Culkin in Magic Time, and seventh was Jerry Goodale in Stormalong.

The summer season continued with a race in Nantucket Sound on Sunday, July 3. It was a sunny, clear day with a northeast wind of about 12 knots at the start of the race. Seven boats posted for the noon starting gun at red nun 6 outside the Vineyard Haven harbor breakwater.

The race committee set an 11.5-mile course, which took the fleet from the starting line to buoy RG at the West End of Hedge Fence, then to green can 15 at the West End of L’Homme Dieu Shoal, then to red bell 2 off Waquoit Bay, and returning around the buoys in reverse to Vineyard Haven harbor. On this course, the east-west crosscurrent is always a major strategic factor for the skippers.

The fleet sailed on a close reach on the starboard tack out of the harbor. Once in the sound, the sailors made for buoy RG in a west-setting current. Once at Hedge Fence, the sailors eased the sheets and beam reached to can 15. After rounding can 15, the boats made for Waquoit, sailing a close reach on the starboard tack. Rounding red bell 2 at Waquoit, a broad reach back to green can 15 ensued, with the sailors riding the wind and current. After making can 15, the fleet beat to buoy RG, fighting the building west-setting current, with the slower boats also contending with a dying breeze. After rounding buoy RG, a beam reach on the port tack took the fleet to the finish line at nun 6 in the harbor.

In the A division, first went to Jerry Coe in the New York 40, Indian Summer. In second was Mike Oliveira in his Tartan Ten, Bora. In third was Bob Jewett in his Soling, Andiamo II. Fourth was Jerry Goodale in Stormalong, fifth was John Amabile in Solitude, and sixth was Irving Gates in King Kiwi. In the B Division, the race was canceled when no contender crossed the line within the four-hour time limit.

The summer racing series continues with a Thursday night race on July 7 and two harbor races, at 10 am and 2 pm, on July 10. New members are actively encouraged, as are guest boats. Anyone interested should contact Anne Good at 508-693-6429.
