Tied at the top

The three-way jam at the women’s softball league summit continues as the Honeys, Creamers, and Snaps all won their games.

The Snaps kept the Vixens record unblemished with a 16–3 victory over the cellar-dwellers.

A first-inning home run by Crystal Walker put the Shady Ladies ahead in the first inning, but after that it was all sweet for the Honeys, 11-2.

Creamers Faith Vanderhoop homered in the second with one on and Sam Burns drove in two with a triple in the sixth, then scored on Veronika Vander Geer’s double to get by the Hazards, 6-2.

Women’s softball standings

Honeys 6-2
Creamers 6-2
Snaps 6-2
Shady Ladies 3-5
Hazards 3-5
Vixens 0-8

Holmes Hole hearties

Last Thursday, seven boats posted for a 6 pm start on an overcast, muggy evening with light (5-knot) southwest winds. The fleet sailed a triangular course from red nun 6 outside V.H. harbor to green can 23A at East Chop, to red nun 4 at West Chop, and then back to the starting line.

Finishing first was Bob Jewett in Andiamo II. Second was Charley Felder in Godspeed. Then came (3) Mike Oliveira in Bora, (4) Jerry Goodale in Stormalong, (5) Phil Hale in Mischief, and (6) Dan Culkin in Magic Time.

It was a clear, beautiful day with light north-northwest winds of 5 knots at the start of Sunday’s Sound race. Twelve boats reported to the starting line to track a course from East Chop to red nun 4 at West Chop to red bell 2 in Vineyard Sound, to buoy RW NW in Nantucket Sound, to green bell 23 near Oak Bluffs and into the harbor to finish at red nun 6.

Jim Pringle and Myfanwy was first to complete the course in the B division followed by Sid Axinn in Tashmoo Traveler, Dan Culkin in Magic Time, Tom Graham in Swallows and Amazons, and Joe Vera in Sol-E-Mar.

Winner in the A division was Roger Becker in Gloria. Frank Sutula’s Magic Twanger was second followed by Phil Hale in Mischief, Dan Rappaport in Juliani, Irving Gates in King Kiwi, Job Jewett in Andiamo II and Art Spielvogel in Hero.

The racing series continues with a harbor race at 6 pm, Thursday. Sunday’s race is the annual Tarpaulin Cove Rendezvous beginning at 6 pm.

New members and guest boats are actively encouraged. Call Anne Good for information, 693-6429.

Luminaries

Meg Leland, Isabelle Lew, and Taylor MacDonald were named to the 17-player Cape Cod Times all--star girls lacrossse team. MV and Sandwich were the only schools represented by three players. Taylor was one of four all-stars not graduating. Katie Campbell, Kerry O’Donoghue, Kayla Leonard, and Brie Sylvia were mentioned with honors.

Katherine Clark and Patrick and Jamie Smadbeck were honorably mentioned, but no MV tennis player, boy or girl, made it to the CCT 10- and 11-player teams. Falmouth placed four on the boys team.

With 115 K’s and a 1.80 ERA, Pitcher Brielle Leonard and slugging (.402) shortstop Kathryn DeBettencourt made it to the CCT all-star softball team. Catcher Kelly Silvia was honored with a mention. Sandwich and Harwich led with three all-stars.

Jordan Hoehn, who held down the hot corner and batted .393 for the Vineyarders, was picked for the CCT all-star baseball team. Pitchers Jacques Penicaud and Matt Kurth and catcher Simon Goldberg made it to the mention list. Seven Barnstable (17-2) players were chosen.

Skipper Ellery Whitworth and crewman Will Felder were a quarter of the eight-tar, all-star C&I sailing team. Only MV and Nauset produced two all-stars. Elise Swartwood, Jen Reekie, and Tristan Lodge of the 9-2 Islanders were all mentioned

Distance runner Allison Flanders and shot putter/discus thrower Alice Hopkins were two of the 15 girls chosen for the all-star girls track and field team. Allison set a new school record, winning the two-mile race at the Mayflower meet. Alice was league champ in the discus and a regular winner in the shot put. Honorably mentioned were high jump school record breaker Katrina Nevin and hurdler Morgan Ibarrondo.

Two of the MVRHS Mayflower League champion boys track team were named by the CCT to its Cape & Islands dream team: sprinter, jumper (and basketball, soccer high scorer) Lucas Brewer and Mitch Robinson, school record setter in the 800. Honorably mentioned were Tim Luce, Derek Nagengast, and Jackson Parker.

Coach Joe Schroeder, who also coaches the girls team, was named Cape & Islands boys track and field coach-of-the-year.

Silver skating

Two of Sam Sherman’s MVRHS girls ice hockey team, Elaina Aristide and Jennifer Murphy, co-captains of the team next winter, played on the Southeast Coastal team in the Bay State Games last week at the New England Sports Center in Marlboro and came away with silver medals and team jackets for their trouble.

The southeast Coastal team, 20 skaters strong, defeated the Mass Central team, Thursday, 10-2. On Friday they lost to Northeast, the eventual champions, 5-1. Next, Coastal beat the Metro squad, Saturday, 6-1. Their double wins qualified Coastal for a second shot at Northeast in the final round, Sunday. The game went into overtime before Northeast claimed it, 5-4.

Bridgeheads

Jean and Lionel McMurran outscored all others sitting north and south at the Bridge Club of MV tables last Saturday at the Tisbury senior center. Deidre Ling and Edward Russell were second best followed by Pearl and Stanley Kissel, Ann Funn and Doris Mitchell.

At east-west, Eleanor Hughes and Calvin Bass led the way, with Margaret Pontecorvo and Alice Childs at place, Charity Randolph and Jerry Jones at show. Joan Jones and Louis Lambert were fourth.

Summer soccer

Still undefeated and at the top of the league standings, Coop deVille looks a little less daunting after a second draw, this time with the Atlantic Football Club.

Tuesday, Atlantic and Sports Haven played to a 2-2 tie and Broadway Screen Printing upset Lath & Plaster, 2-1.

Joshua Sohn, who won the race twice in the last three years, including last year, is 3,000 miles away and Kevin Gray, the race record holder at 15:32 has not registered for the run which will begin at 9 am at Katama Farm. The Fun Run for kids starts at 8:45 am.

Freetown trip

The 11- and 12-year-old MV Little League all-stars were at Freetown last weekend playing teams from Carver, Tiverton, and Rehoboth.

The Islanders lost all three of their games, but two of them were close.

The Carver game score was 4-2. Taylor Smith was 2-for-2 including a double and an rbi. Peter Keaney also drove in a run.

The second game, with Tiverton, was even closer, 2-1. Andrew Williamson drove in the only MV run with a triple.

The third game, played at “Little Fenway,” was a laugher for Rehoboth, 17-3. Taylor Smith doubled and scored. Peter Keaney had two singles and scored on Ben Ciciora’s out-of-the-park home run. Delmont Araujo also hit safely.

The Vineyarders will be one of 18 teams in the Sandwich tournament this weekend.

Men’s Softball League

In the Monday triple-header at Veterans Park, Tisbury, the Batdogs sailed by the Riptide, the Wildcats cooled the Boilers, and the Brewhas trod on the Treds, 12-5.

Previously, last Thursday, it was the Batdogs over the Boilers, the Canes over the Treds, and the Wildcats over Riptide.

Only one game was played last Wednesday when the Hurricanes got by the Wildcats.

Last night the Makos played twice. First they mixed it up with the Hurricanes; then they took on the Brewhas. Also Wednesday, the Cats and Dogs went at it in a game to decide third place.

The Treds and Makos play the early game today followed by Boilers vs. Riptide, and Hurricanes vs. Brewhas, ending the scheduled season.

On Sunday the league changes its format for a one-pitch tournament. After that it’s the playoffs.

Standings as of July 26

Brewhas 11-1
Hurricanes 10-2
Sandogs 9-4
Wildcats 8-5
Makos 6-5
Treds 4-9
Boilers 2-11

Save the dates

Dr. Greg Dale, Associate professor and sport psychology consultant at Duke University, will speak at MVRHS on August 22 and 23. A former high school coach and a dynamic speaker, Dr. Dale has conducted workshops for coaches, parents and athletes around the world.

Monday, Aug. 22, Dr. Dale will address student athletes in the afternoon and parents in the evening. The next morning he will conduct a workshop for the entire MVRHS coaching staff.

Some may want to get a running start by reading one or more of Dr. Dale’s published books: “The Parents Guide to Helping Kids Thrive Rather Than Survive in Sport” and “The Seven Secrets of Successful Coaches: How to Unlock and Unleash Your Team’s Full Potential.”

MVRHS Athletic Director Glen Field is grateful to several athletic booster clubs for making Dr. Dale’s visit possible

Girls softball at Revere

The 10 and under girls all-star softball team traveled to Revere last weekend. Their first game with Winchester was counted a win because Winchester never showed up. Competition got tougher as they took on host Revere, a ranked team, and lost 26-7. Things got easier, but not much, when they went up against Agawam. The Islanders lost in a slaughter rule-shortened game, 17-7. They also lost their first baseman, Elizabeth Kelleher whose wrist was broken in a collision during the game.

The roster: Sammi Chaves, Celia Mercier, Eva Balboni, Katie Stewart, Kendall Robinson, Hannah Perrson, Kelsey DeBettencourt, Sarah Williston, Alex Mazza, and Elizabeth.

Ernie Chaves, Jim Keppler, and Phil Mercier are the coaches.
