Oar & Paddle
Sixty-five humans and three dogs entered the 15th annual MV Oar and Paddle Assn. Regatta, Sunday, a benefit for The Friends of Sengekontacket Pond.
The usual course, from the “little bridge” to the “big bridge” and the length of Sengekontacket, was reversed giving the paddlers and rowers a boost from an outgoing tide at the big bridge and a tail wind the length of the beach to the little bridge.
As usual, the best time was posted by Dana Gaines, 48, in his more than 18’ kayak, 23:52, beating his ‘04 winning time for the 2.5-mile course by 10 seconds.
Other winning kayak times were: composite kayak, 16-18 feet: male, John Moore, 51, 25:53; female: Fran Loftus, 63, 48:11.
Plastic kayak, 16-18 feet: male, Percy Burt, 45, 26:14; female, Patricia Jette, 39, 42:40.
Under 16-foot kayak: male, Jim Welch, 51, 29:07; female, Stephanie Colson, 20, 30:54.
Fishing kayak, 12 feet: Jay Schofield, 63, 33:56.
The senior kayak winners were Herb Foster, 76, 38:22 (a new record for longevity) and Kathy Rose, 69, 45:32.
The kids kayak winners were Alex Huth, 14, 38:39 and Alyssa Laslovich, 11, 77:40.
The open double kayak competition was won by Tyler Stapleton, 31, and Chick Dowd, 27, in 27:06.
The fastest female double kayak was paddled by Laurie Jacobs, 40, and Allison Ruggiero, 12, 40:29.
The class of the double with child kayak class were Jo Casper, 51, and Rebecca Colson, 12, 43:21.
The double with infant honors went to Pat Loftus, 61 and Caroline, 3; 50:09.
Linda Huth, 50, with Spyder, won the double with dog race at 43:29. The two-dog class was led by Bridget Dunnigan, 37, and Roger Williams, 37, with Dupree and Mullett, ages unknown, 33:16.
It was the first year that a six-man rowing gig participated. The Vineyard Voyagers made the trip in 27:03.
Peter Breeze and family completed the course in a rowboat in 34:10. Pat Loftus and Caroline Keller, with kayak in tow, did it in 48:44.
At five years old, Jack Hayes set a new record for youngest rower. He completed a kids course in less than three minutes.
Ed Lee Oliver was awarded a special prize for the best decorated boat. His time for the race was 31:58.

Derek Seber, 16, sets a record
Sixteen-year-old Derek Seber of Pittsford, N.Y., won the 17th annual Sullivan 5K Run/Walk for Health and Fitness, Saturday, setting a new record for the event in 16:57. The previous record, 17:11, was set by Jim Hill in 2001.
The first female to complete the run was Danielle D’Angelo, 43, of New Rochelle, N.Y., in 21:20. She was 7th overall.
Other women finishing in the top 20 were (14) Janine Seber, 15, Pittsford, N.Y., 21:46; (16) Marylee Schroeder, 41, West Tisbury, 22:00; (17) Betsy Carroll, 45, Clinton, Conn., 22:06; (20) Kristin Desaultelle, 38, Darien, Conn., 22:36.
The weather was hot and dry with light sea breezes and temperatures in the low 80’s.
The rest of the top 10 runners were: (2) Peter Vizcarrondo, 16, New York, N.Y., 17:21; (3) David Porter, 35, Doylestown, Penn., 19:00; (4) Dana Gaines, 48, Edgartown, 19:25; (5) John Carroll, 42, Clinton, Conn., 19:34; (6) Michael Testagrossa, 15, Hudson, N.H., 21:07; (8) Larry Lewis, 51, Scotia, N.Y., 21:21; (9) Kevin Westrich, Fairport, N.Y., 21:23; (10) Tom Phair, 42: Burlington, 21:27.
In all, 181 runners and walkers completed the course including Dr. Louis W. Sullivan, Secretary of Health and Human Services from 1989 to 1993, the founder of the event for whom it is named. Dr. Sullivan walked the course in 1:02:15.
