Pro's vs. Deputies
It wasn’t much of a softball game. Maybe it was just too hot. Maybe the sere grass at Veterans Park dried up the competitive juices in the visiting retired professional athletes. Maybe they only perform for the big bucks.
Whatever the reason, the Sheriff’s Deputies had no trouble beating the pro-celebrity team, 17-7, Sunday at Veterans Park, Tisbury.
Ken Linsman, of the Boston Bruins, led off for the Pros with a single into left field. The Patriots’ John Smith reached on a flair to right, Linsman stopped at second base. Rawley Eastwick, the Cincinnati Reds reliever who was credited with two wins against the Red Sox in the 1975 World Series, popped out to third. (Eastwick also gave up the three-run pinch-hit homer to Bernie Carbo which sent the sixth game of the Series into extra innnings, setting the stage for Fisk’s often revisited waved game winner.)
Patriot Steve DeOssie singled to right center scoring Linsman. Terry O’Reilly, the Bruins enforcer, singled into left, loading the bases. Chris Nilan, who played for the Canadiens for 13 years and spent more time in NHL penalty boxes in than anyone else for two seasons, 1983-85, singled, driving in Smith. Tom Songin, a Bruin, grounded out, scoring DeOssie. Pats nose-tackle Mike Ruth popped out to short, ending the inning.
The Pro’s had scored three runs.
In the bottom of the first, Deputy Bob Ogden led off with a home run into right center. The Deputies batted around and then some, posting seven runs.
The Pro’s managed to score one in the third. After DeOssie doubled, Nilan’s fly ball was dropped in center field, allowing DeOssie to score.
At the bottom of the lineup, Gary Doak of the Bruins and Peter Brock of the Pats scored in the fourth, driven in by DeOssie.
The Pro’s added another run in the sixth when Linsman, Smith, and Eastwick all singled.
The Deputies scored in every inning off the serving of Terry O’Reilly: seven in the first; one in the second; two in the third, fourth, and fifth; and three in the sixth.
Woody Araujo and John Nelson were 4-for-4 at the plate. Bob Brown also reached four times, once on an error.
The game was played as a benefit for the various charities supported by the Dukes County Deputy Sheriffs’ Assn.

Challenge for Charity
Parthenon Capital hosted the 7th Annual Challenge for Charity Sail on Thursday, August 25, at Newport, R.I. matching two former 12-Meter America’s Cup winners, Freedom and Intrepid, in three races on Narragansett Bay.
Ernest Jacquet of Edgartown, managing partner of Parthenon, found Freedom in France and restored her to her original racing specifications. In August 2001, Freedom was shipped to England to compete in the America’s Cup Jubilee Regatta celebrating the 150th anniversary of the original America’s Cup. Freedom won the Gold Medal for the International 12 Metre Modern class with Mr. Jacquet as skipper. Previously, Freedom had successfully defended the America’s Cup, with Dennis Connor as skipper, in 1980.
Child & Family Services of Newport County and the Martha’s Vineyard Boys & Girls Club were the recipients of this year’s charitable donations.
The Boys & Girl Club, founded 64 years ago to provide recreational services for children on the Island, is the only professionally supervised youth facility on the Vineyard. It provides a friendly, constructive, year-round place where Island youngsters can spend their time productively.
Robinsons Hole
or bust
By John Amabile
The Holmes Hole Sailing Assn. continued its Thursday evening handicap sailboat racing from Vineyard Haven Harbor with a 6 pm race on August 25. It was a partly cloudy, warm evening with a light and variable wind. Twelve boats posted for the start at red nun 6 outside the Vineyard Haven breakwater. Because of the light air, a short course was set, taking the fleet to green can 23a at East Chop and back to the red nun. When the gun sounded at 6 pm, the wind died, and the first boat did not cross the line until 6:20. The fleet limped downwind to the green can. As the boats made the mark, a wisp of wind filled in, and built for a decent beat to windward to the finish line.
Finishing first was Phil Hale in his Alerion Sloop, Mischief. Second was Mike Oliveira in his Tartan Ten, Bora. Peter Hyman-Young in the Sonar, Eclipse was third, followed by (4) Jerry Goodale in Stormalong; (5) Jeff Gibson in Latonka; (6) Don Cohan in Summertime; (7) Dan Culkin in Magic Time; (8) John and Lisa Stout in Isabella; (9) Woody Bowman in Julia Lee; and (10) John Strock in Sweet Pea. Godspeed and Juliani retired in the light air.
The summer series continued on Sunday, August 28, with the Robinsons Hole Rendezvous Race. Robinsons Hole is a passage between Vineyard Sound and Buzzards Bay on the West end of Naushon in the Elizabeth Islands. It was a sunny summer morning with a southeast wind of 10-12 knots. Eleven boats posted for the start at red nun 6 outside the Vineyard Haven breakwater. The fleet raced across the starting line at 10 am and sailed to red nun 4 at West Chop, the only mark of the course, on a broad reach on the starboard tack. After rounding the nun, the fleet ran into the Sound, and hardened up for the westerly beam reach up the Sound to the finish.
In the A division, first was Frank Satula in his J 29, Magic Twanger. Second was Roger Becker in his C&C 24, Gloria. In third was Phil Zell in his Geiger 35, Lapwing. Then came (4) John Amabile in Solitude; (5) Don Cohan in Summertime; (6) Mike Oliveira in Bora; (7) Jerry Coe in Indian Summer; and (8) Art Spielvogel in Hero.
In the B division, Jim Pringle in the Sailmaster, Myfanwy, was first. Second was Dan Culkin in the Vineyard Vixen, Magic Time. Third were Art and Caroline Spengler in the Nonsuch, Raven.
The summer racing series concludes with two Harbor Races on Sunday, September 4, at 10 am and 2 pm. New members are actively encouraged, as are guest boats. Anyone interested should contact Anne Good at 693-6429
