Boys soccer
The graduation of Lucas Brewer, the MVRHS soccer scoring record holder, leaves a gaping hole in the team's offense and the team lost its goalie, Finn Briggs, too. But if you expect to find Coach Bob Hammond feeling sorry for himself, forget it. By his own admission he is "cocky" about the fall. "We have a great junior class," he said, and some excellent seniors. A sophomore, Nick Cuba, is the likely choice for goal-keeper.
Probably half the team played summer soccer in the VFL and gained important experience.
The Vineyarders scrimmaged with Scituate here, Monday, and dominated, 4-0. Saturday, The Vineyarders held their own with E.O. Smith, one of the stronger soccer programs in Connecticut.
The 18-game schedule began with a 5-1 win at D-Y, Tuesday.
The first home game is with Sandwich, Monday, Sept. 12. Nauset and Seekonk are new to the schedule replacing Falmouth, Harwich, and Cape Cod Tech.
Aaron Robinson is the new JV coach. John Walsh will assist again and Kevin Goudy will coach goalies.

A large Old Rochester Regional team found it was not easy going during its scrimmage against an active Purple defense.

Football
The 10-game football schedule is one game less than last year's. Lynn Classical, Pembroke, and Middleboro have replaced Westwood, Greater Lowell Tech, Somerset and Bourne.
The season opens at home, with Carver, Friday evening, Sept. 16.
The football team, like the cross-country teams, is still in the Mayflower League so the season ends with Blue Hills, South Shore, Cape Cop Tech, B-P, and Nantucket. The Nantucket game is here, Nov. 11.
Head coach Donald Herman and coach of defense Bill Belcher agree that this year's team is an improvement over last year's and there is discernible but cautious optimism among the hierarchy.
Asssiting coaches include Dan Rossi, Mike McCarthy, Steve Barbee, Steve McCarthy. Ryan Ruley is head coach of the JV's with help from Greg Belcher, Jason O'Donnell, Dave Cassidy, and Phil Hughes.

Toward the end of the game the Islanders swarmed around the D/R goalie who managed, somehow, to keep the ball out of the net.

Field hockey
Chosen Distinquished Service Award winner by the Girls and Women in Sport Committee of the MIAA, Lisa Knight, is enthusiastic about her young and speedy team – there are three freshmen on the squad: Phebe Bates, Zoe Fisher, and Alexa Fisher. Reasons for enthusiasm were evident at the team's home opener, Tuesday. They clearly outplayed D-R, but lost the game, 1-0.
The 18-game schedule is sans arch-rival Harwich, Bourne, and Falmouth, replaced by Apponequet, Seekonk, Fairhaven, and Dighton-Rehoboth
Lindsay Pinzer Smith is assistant coach. Betsy Dripps and Julie Schaeffer coach the jayvees.
Golf
Coach Doug DeBettencourt's golf team lost five of its members to graduation including most of the starters. Sophomore Tony Grillo and junior Lilla Warren are '05 team captains.
The season opened with a 38-16 loss to Apponequet away. Only Tony Grillo won his nine-hole match, 6-3. Probable starters will include the team captains and juniors Mike Diaz and Josh Flanders, sophomores Albion Alley, Greg Leonard, and Joe Jerome. Freshmen Tad Gold and Gus Hayes stand ready to fill any vacancies.
Twelve of the Golf team's 19 scheduled matches are in September. The rest are in early October. They were home to Sandwich yesterday.
Apponequet and Seekonk have replaced Upper Cape Cod on the golf team's schedule

Rachell Schubert dribbles around a Sandwich defender.
She scored the Vineyard's only goal of the game.

Girls Soccer
Coach Russ MacDonald's girls soccer team looked strong in its season opener versus Sandwich, and we predict a marked improvement over last year's record.
The coach says this year's team is fun to coach: "They want to learn", he said. The 18 game schedule is "challenging" with teams from divisions one, two, and three. Sacred Heart visits today at 3:15 pm
Jess Branch is assistant coach, and Amy Maciel coaches the junior varsity.
Cross-country
The Cape Cod Times pick for boys track & field coach-of-the-year, Joe Schroeder, has three of last year's top five Mayflower League cross-country champs returning: Edison Parzanese, Jackson Parker and Lucas Emin. He expects Ry Yennie to step up and fill one of the vacancies caused by graduation.
The changes in the schedule show Apponequet and Fairhaven replacing Sandwich, Abington, and Dighton-Rehoboth.
Only two of last year's girls cross-country team graduated in June, but they were 3-year team leaders Gwen Mayhew and Gen Flanders. The class of '06 should provide adequate replacements, including Allison Flanders, Cassandra Gaines, Lauren Franklin, and Morgan Ibarrondo.
The season-opening home meets with Taunton, September 9, should be revealing.
Scramble at the Meadow
Winners in the Labor Day Scramble at Mink Meadows, Monday, were Bill Lehmberg, Jay Foley, Eleanor Barrie and Rupert Robinson with a best-ball score of 63.
Tied for second at 65 were Duncan McBride, Cliff Robinson, Dennis Burt, and Sally Roesler with George Platt, Ralph Gordon, Gerry Gerolamo, and Cathy Badot.
Three teams finished with the same 66 score: Len Vanderhoop, Leon Bennett, Sally Fitzgerald, and Ellen Serusa; Craig Sexton, Todd Hollister, Kay McDonough, and Carrie Barrie; Dick Stone, Jim Hamilton, Bob Huss, and Rita Bean.
Sally Roesler was closest lady to the pin on the seventh green and drove the farthest from the 10th tee.
Among the men, John Rancourt was closest to the 7th pin and Len Vanderhoop had the longest drive.
Bridgeheads
At the Bridge Club of MV tables, Saturday, Joan and Bill Green outplayed all at north/south, edging out (2) Gloria and Theodore Manning and (3) Barbara Donald and Clara J. Hargrave.
At east/west the top scores belonged to Charity Randolph and Geraldine Jones, trailed by (2) Betty Dixon and Claudia Bowser and (3) Betty Morris and Reginald McDonough.
The 28th Moffett
The 28th annual George Moffett race is scheduled to start between two orange pyramids off East Chop, Saturday, in two divisions — at 11:30 and 11:40 am. Weather permitting, the course will take the fleet to Edgartown harbor and back, a nominal distance of 19.8 nautical miles.
Last year 59 boats finished the race.
The race is named for George Moffett Jr., donor of Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary and a founder of the Holmes Hole Sailing Assn. Capt. Moffett sailed his yacht Guinevere to victory in the Bermuda Race and the Southern Ocean Racing Conference series of races.
His widow, Lucia Moffett, and the late Pat West organized the first Moffett race in his memory in 1978. It has been sailed every year since.

Winter Guys race
The Frost Biters and Winter Guys sailed their first evening race of the fall season Thursday. Eight boats turned out on a clear, cool evening with a southwest wind at six knots. The course was set by principal race officer Michael Jacobs and vice commodore Harry B. Duane and began with a reach from Nun 6 in the harbor to West Chop, a reach to Green Can 23A off East Chop and a beat back to Nun 6 in the harbor. Scoring was by race committee member Melissa Molloy.
Phil Hale finished first in Mischief. Mike Oliviera was second in Bora followed by (3) Charlie Felder in Godspeed, (4) Dan Culkin in Magic Time, (5) William Bowman in Julie Lee, (6) Jerry Goodale in Stormalong, (7) Jim Stout in Isabella, and (8) Peter Strock in Sweet Pea.
Post race discussions followed at Bob’s on Main Street.
Racing continues tonight at 6 pm with dinner again at Bob’s. For more information, call Michael Jacobs at 713-249-1689.
Field hockey
In a game that was dominated by the losing team, Dighton-Rehoboth sailed off with a 1-0 field hockey win, Tuesday. It was the kind of season opener that is often described as a character builder.
Coach Lisa Knight took her young squad to D-Y yesterday.
MV boots D-Y
The Boys soccer team opened its season with an impressive 5-1 win at Dennis–Yarmouth, Tuesday.
Coach Hammond was especially pleased with the goaltending of Nico Cuba who blocked a penalty shot in the fist half and made several quick reaction saves in the second.
Davy Campbell got the Islanders started with a direct kick 12 minutes into the game. Ben Medeiros scored the second goal off a corner cick by Zach Sylvia. In the second half Antulio Neto scored twice and Ben Post provided MV’s final goal.
The Islanders are at Nauset tomorrow and their home opener is with a strong Sandwich team, Monday at 3:15..

A soccer loss
The girls varsity soccer team led Sandwich at the half, 1-0, on a goal by Rachel Schubert, assisted by Alaina Aristide. The team looked sharp, more than holding their own against a taller opponent. But the Blue Knights scored twice in the second half, taking full advantage of a penalty kick and a direct kick.
Gridiron largesse
The MVRHS football team is selling discount Purple Pride cards for the Touchdown Club and has designated ten percent for hurricane relief through the Red Cross. Thus far they have raised some $2,000 for Katrina victims and expect to increase that at least by another $500
