Hockey team is in
With an impressive 2-0 shutout of Duxbury, here, Saturday, the MVRHS field hockey team qualified for MIAA post-season play with a 9-5 record.
Katie Keppeler converted a Nina Butler pass for the game's first goal in the first half. Ashley Medeiros put the ball on Brielle Leonard's stick for the second score.
Goalie Melanie Dickson applied the whitewash. Seven of the team's nine wins have been by shutout.
Tuesday's nor'easter washed out the D-R game, postponing it to Wednesday.
Three games remain: at Fairhaven today, Old Rochester visits Friday, and the girls are at Apponequet, Sunday.
The Friday game will be the last scheduled home game for the team's seven seniors and for Coach Lisa Knight as well. Lisa is retiring as coach of the field hockey team. She will be missed.
Frosties
The Frost Biters and Winter Guys sailed Thursday, squeezing in a race between gale force winds the week before and then again last Sunday.
Five boats started in crisp northwest winds blowing 8 to 10 knots with the tide running westerly.
The triangular course sent the fleet from Nun 6 in Vineyard Haven harbor to Nun 4 at West Chop, then to Can 23A at East Chop, and back to Nun 6.
The winning boat was Magic Time with Dan Culkin at the helm, Phil Hale was second in Mischief, followed by (3) Geoff Gibson in LaTonka, (4) Charlie Felder in Godspeed, and (5) Mike Oliviera in Bora. Twenty-two seconds separated the third and fifth boats.

High kickers
The MVRHS girls soccer team played Hanover to a 2-2 tie, Saturday, on the Indians' turf. The Islanders had lost their previous meeting, here, 0-1.
Hanover led at the half, 1-0 and scored a second goal 18 minutes into the second period. Rachel Schubert put the Vineyard on the scoreboard with an indirect kick then scored the evener off a pass from Katherine Clark.
MV goalie Justine Fogt was challenged five times in the closing minutes and rose to the occasion.
The 4-9-2 Islanders host Sacred Heart today and close out the season at Dighton Rehoboth, Tuesday. Last Tuesday's game at Sandwich was canceled by rain.
Chase again
Tournament directors are catching on. At Simsbury, Conn., Chace Urban of Tisbury was the top seed in the USTA Level 6 tourney last weekend.
He fulfilled all expectations by winning all three of his matches, including the final versus the second seed, Thomas Suchodolski of Amherst, 6-1, 6-1.
Hammond's heroes
At Seekonk, Friday, the Vineyard varsity boys soccer team led at the half, 2-1. Scoring were Torbelli Assis and Zach Sylvia. Davey Campbell assisted on the Assis header.
The Warriors scored twice in the second period to take s 3-2 lead until Ryan Dwayne evened the count off a reboumd with two minutes left on the clock.
Final score: 3-3.
Old Rochester came to call Monday, then left on the short end of a 3-0 score. Freshman Torbelli Assis scored the first MV goal assisted by Antulio Neto ten minutes into the contest, then scored the third goal in the second half.
In between the Assis goals, Will Rogers put the ball on Jeff Taylor's foot and Jeff did the honors.
It was goalie Nico Cuba's fourth shutout of the season. The win guaranteed MV a place at the post-season table.
The purple punters are 8-3-3 on the year.
The team is home to Chatham tomorrow and D-R Saturday. The final game is at Sandwich, Wednesday.

Gridiron grind
In a game featuring two field goals by E.J. Sylvia, one a 40-yard blast, an intentional safety, and an 11-yard scoring scamper by Matt Lucier plus a Sylvia PAT, the Vineyarders won their first Mayflower Large League contest Friday at the Dan McCarthy Field, with a 15-12 victory over Blue Hills.
Regrettably the game also featured cheap shots and personal fouls, six by Blue Hills, four by the Vineyard. At least those were the ones that were called!
In the fourth quarter the Warriors stopped fouling and put together a nine-minute, 75-yard scoring drive in 23 plays.
Islander Tony Cortez played a conspicuously strong game on defense and special teams.
Halfback Ossie Lathan did the heavy lugging for Blue Hills.
Apart from some facial scratches, the Islanders came away unscathed and ready for the next test.
This week's game is with unbeaten South Shore Vocational Tech at Hanover. South Shore, 6-0, came from behind to beat Cape Cod Tech, Saturday, 27-20, and has also beaten Nantucket.
JVs in a close one
Coach Ryan Ruley's junior varsity squad scored as many touchdowns as did Blue Hills at Canton, Monday, but the junior Warriors added a pair of two point extras and claimed a 22-18 win.
Kevin Walsh scored the first MV touchdown on a 70-yard kick return. Josh Paulson had the other two scores, one at the end of a 50-yard pass play from Ben Rossi, the other on an eight-yard run.
It was the jayvees' first loss.
The JVs host South Shore at 1 pm, Sunday.
A meet to remember
Saturday's boys and girls cross-country meets with visiting Sacred Heart had contrasting results.
The first six boys to complete the 5K run wore purple: (1) Edison Parzanese, 16:42, (2) Jackson Parker, 17:28, (3) Ry Yennie, 18:33 (4) Lucas Emin, 18:34 (5) Mason Fischer, 18:40 (6) Evan Kendall, 18:53. The perfect score was 15-46. The MV boys are 9-1 on the year.
The girls race was a near thing. Allison Flanders finished first at 20:05, the second fastest time ever run by a girl on the state forest course, one half minute ahead of the fabulous freshman Hilary Dreyer who was second at 20:37. Sagitta Woodman was fifth in 21:30, a personal best. But then came five Sacred Heart girls. MV's Sarah Flanders was 10th in 22:40.
Sacred Heart eked out the 28-29 win. It was the MV girls first loss of the season. Their record is now 8-1.
The Mayflower league meet was moved one week to Tuesday, November 1.
Saturday is the South Shore Principals Meet.
Skateboarding
The MV Skate Board Assn. will hold its second competition at the skate park across the road from the high school on Saturday, Oct. 29. Registration forms are available at the Green Room on Main Street, Vineyard Haven. The $10 registration fees will benefit the park. Registration on Saturday begins at 10 am with the competition beginning at noon.
Helmets are required. Food and drink will be provided for entrants.
FOVS on the road
The Friends of Vineyard Soccer travel soccer evaluation and registration will be Saturday, Nov. 5, at the West Tisbury school field from 2 to 4 pm. Rain date is Sunday, Nov. 6.
Registration fee is $175 and includes uniforms and travel expenses. Bring cleats and shin guards, water, and a parent or guardian.
Boys and girls teams will be formed according to the number of registered players. Teams from U-9 (third graders) to U-18 (high schoolers) have been formed in the past. Teams play four home games at Veteran's Field behind the Tisbury fire station and four away.

Birdies for Baseball, a benefit tourney for the new baseball field at the high school, begins with a shotgun start at Mink Meadows this Saturday at 8:30 am.
