Youth
Hockey
MV Youth Hockey teams played eight games, four off-Island, four on,
last week.
Saturday, at the Arena, the PeeWee As survived a third period
rally by Lower Cape to win, 4-3. Chris Davies and Jock Cooperrider
score purple points in the first period, assisted by Dakota Delviento
and Teddy Kram. In the second frame goals were by Tyler Araujo with
help from Nick Dorr, and by Kevin Gallagan assisted by Chris Davies.
Alex Dorr was the winning goalie.
Also at the Arena, Sunday, the unbeaten in league (11-0-2) Bantam
Yankees skated to a 1-1 tie with Barnstable White. Center Jarek Peters
put a nifty move on the Barnstable goalie (30 saves) assisted by Alexa
Fisher, for the MV score. MV netman Zach Waller was tested only eight
times but was taken out of the play for the Barnstable goal.
Despite two unassisted goals by Jordy Abrams, Lower Cape defeated
the MV Squirts with two goals in the third period, 4-2. Zollie Clarke
and Mike Sylvia shared time in the MV cage, facing 20 shots on goal.
The Lower Cape goalie was challenged 16 times.
The MV Bantam As lost to Barnstable, 7-1. The lone MV goal was
Scott Clearys abetted by Matthew Flynn. Mike Capen was in the
MV goal.
In an away game, the Bantam Yankees shut out Nantucket, 3-0. Jarek
Peters, Antone Silvia, and Nick Kiersted scored. Alexa Fisher, Zoe
Fisher, and Connor Johnson assisted. Goalie Zach Waller earned the
shutout.
At the Kennedy Rink in Hyannis, the PeeWee As earned a 6-4 win
on goals by Jock Cooperrider (2), Charles Goldthwaite (2), Chris Davies,
and Tyler Araujo.
In the weekly House Mite duel, the Reds overcame a 2-0 deficit to
defeat the Blacks going away, 5-2. The Reds now lead in the series,
3-2.
Darts fly at the PA
Steve Furtaw, Cindy Griesser, and Peter Valentas took home the dart
league money on Dec. 9, after defeating Rene Mathieu, Bill Frizzell,
and Karen Wojtkielo in a playoff, after both teams had defeated opponents,
6-5.
The next week the Fred Pekari partisans, Steve Maciel, Kurt Tesch,
and Charlene Barbosa, beat Charlene Alley and allies Mike Lipinsky
and Peter Searle, 7-4.
The Furtaw fusileers lead the league with 82 points, followed by Fred
Pekaris people (77) and the Charlene Alley alliance (69).
MAC wants you
The members of Marthas Athletic Club (MAC) invites everyone
men and women, boys and girls to join them for a New
Years Day run beginning at the Tisbury school at 10 am, January
1. Runners, joggers, walkers may chose between a 5-mile or a 5-kilometer
route.
No charge. No pressure. No competition. Everyone is a winner.
Edison is chosen
Edison Parzanese of Edgartown, the MVRHS record setting cross-country
runner and high scoring attackman on the schools lacrosse team,
has been named to the Top Gun Fighting Clams all-star
indoor lacrosse team. The team has 22 high school varsity players
chosen from the 1,700 athletes in the Top Gun Indoor Lacrosse Leagues
in Acton, Northboro, and Plymouth.
The Fighting Clams will represent this region at the National Indoor
Lacrosse Championship tourney at Hightstown, New Jersey over the Martin
Luther King weekend, Jan. 14-17. Twenty four teams representing various
areas of the country will compete.
Sharpshooting muzzleloader
Bernie Arruda won the traditional firearm championship shoot-off at
the MV Rod and Gun Club, Sunday. It was his first win at the annual
competition. Tom Taylor and Kevin Gunderson tied for second place.
In the relatively new category of modern blackpowder, Steve Jordan
had the highest score. It was his third win in the category. At place
and show were Alan Albee and Phil Hughes.
Winners took home hams and turkeys donated by Edgartown Stop &
Shop and Cronigs Market.
RCBL Week 5
The early game at the B&G Club on Monday pitted the undefeated
Timberwolves against the winless Legends with unsurprising results,
a 111-72 win for the T-Wolves.
Asil Cash led the Lobos to the hoop with 37 points. Also in double
numbers: Mike Joyce 22, Brian Welch 16, Harrison Holmes 12, and Chuck
Downing 10 .
High men for the Legends were Julius Middleton (13) and David Perez
(12). Whatever hopes the Legends may have had for making a comeback
run disappeared when Brian Scott was slapped with a second technical
and forced to leave the game.
Shorthanded Lakers prevail
In the nightcap the Lakers and Patriots went at it. Only five Lakers
showed up for the game so Heath Estrella, Albie Robinson, Jeff LaBell,
John Healy and Greg Johnson played 48 minutes without rest. As a matter
of fact, Johnson arrived late and the Lakers began the game with four
players. But they stepped up to the challenge, especially Heath Estrella
who quietly assumed command at both ends of the court leading both
teams in rebounds and scoring a game high 33 points including 12 of
14 from the free throw line. Jeff LaBell had 29. Albie Robinson 25,
Greg Johnson 18 and John Healy 14.
Five Pats finished in two columns: Damon Mello 21, Ryan Murtha 20,
Sandy Fisher 20, Teejay Roginski 15, and Jason Dyer 13.
As usual, the RCBL will take a holiday break.

Interscholastic action
The previously unbeaten Edgartown girls suffered their first loss
of the basketball season at West Tisbury, Thursday, 25-21. E-towns
Jessie Donoghue had the game high 12. Loren Gibson of WesTiz chipped
in 8 and Sarah Flanders, 6.
The Edgartown boys kept their record clean with a home court 64-56
win over Tisbury. The Tigers gave the Eagles something to think about
and trailed by just four with a minute left. Mike McCarthy and Steve
Handy soared highest for the Eagles, both with 14 points at games
end.
Andrew McElhinny had the game high 18 for Tisbury. Allen Berol added
10 more.
Monday, the West Tisbury boys doused the OB Blazers, 44-40. Nick Gross
was high for the up-Islanders with 18. Franklin Taylors 12 paced
the OB attack.
Deer season
A faithful Times reader sent us an e-mail that says, according to
the Alaskan Department of Fish and Game, both male and female reindeer
grow antlers in the summer but the males shed their antlers in late
November or early December. Female reindeer keep their antlers until
they give birth in the spring.
Obviously, Prancer, Dancer, Blitzen & Co. are all females.
But of course! Only women could get away with dragging an overweight
man in an outlandish red suit all around town, late at night, breaking
and entering, and not get arrested.
Boys hoops
The undefeated Wareham Vikings were too much for the Vineyard boys
varsity, Friday, jumping off to a 37-19 lead at the half and extending
that to a 73-50 finish.
Tim Scott (9), Lucas Brewer (8) and Matt Rivers (8) accounted for
half of the purple points
MV took its 1-2 record to D-Y yesterday. |
