Vineyard teams are second best in Island Invitational hoops tourneys

In the Island Invitational girls tournament opening round Saturday, Harwich beat Sabis International Charter School of Springfield, 54-45 and Martha's Vineyard topped Mount Everett from the Berkshires, 41-27.

Taylor MacDonald (12), Nina Butler (9), and Tiffany Smalley (8) led the Islanders to the hoop. MV's lead at the half was only 17-13, but they had already demonstrated their ability to dominate.

The Monday consolation game was a win for Mt. Everett over Sabis.

Also Monday, Harwich claimed the girls championship trophy with an eight-point win over the Vineyard.

Midway in the first quarter MV held a 16-12 edge, but at the end of the period Harwich was up, 29-21, primarily due to the hot hand of Caleigh Crowell.

The Islanders made a run at the lead early in the second half and got within two, 33-35. But a 19-2 response by the Rough Riders restored their lead and then some, 56-37. With time running out, Nina Butler and Brielle Leonard dropped treys. Brittany Stone sank a jumper. Bandaged Kelly Silvia made an appearance and a free throw. Nina Butler launched another smart bomb. But it was too little, too late and Harwich claimed the game and tourney title, 57-49.

Named to the all-tournament team were Mt. Everett's Kelly Funk, Adriean Gabriel of Sabis, MV's Taylor MacDonald, and Caleigh Crowell and Lauren Gonsalves of Harwich. Amanda Gonsalves, Lauren's sister, was named MVP.

Boys tournament
In the boys tourney, Sabis swamped Mt. Everett on Saturday, 94-45. Midway in the second half, after a couple of crowd-pleasing dunks, Isiah Wallace dropped a three-pointer from the left corner. Play stopped. It was announced that Wallace, a junior, had just scored the 1,000th point of his career. The ball was awarded to him and he, in turn, presented it to his favorite fan, his mother. The outcome of the game had clearly been decided -Sabis led, 77-28 - and Wallace was seated for the rest of the game.

Sabis appeared so strong in every phase of the game that one wondered how they had managed to lose two games as their record stood at 16-2.

In Saturday's second game, Nantucket jumped out to an 11-2 lead over the Vineyarders, but a layup by Bubba Brown, a couple of buckets by Matt Rivers, three Brown freebies and two more by Rivers and the score was tied, 15-15. Two more from the foul line by Rivers and another deuce by John Swan coupled with seven in a rush by Jacob Vanderhoop off the bench and the Vineyard was ahead to stay, 32-18. Nantucket reduced the Vineyard lead to six midway through the second half but hoops by Rivers and Vanderhoop restored the double-digit margin to 59-47.

In the closing minutes, Nick Viera scored eight points in a hurry, boosting the Vineyard to its final winning count, 81-52.

Matt Rivers impressed again with a game-leading 31 points, almost all from under the glass where he was surrounded by Whalers. He was also credited with 14 rebounds. Both Jacob Vanderhoop and Nick Viera contributed a dozen to the winning total.

Sunday finals
Nantucket had its way with Mt. Everett in the consolation game, 87-48. Eleven Whalers contributed to the final tally, led by Jordan Ferriera (19) and Wesley LaMotta (16).

The ball refused to drop for the Vineyard early in the first half of the final contest with Sabis and the Bulldogs from Springfield enjoyed a 32-13 lead with time running out in the period. But in the time remaining Sabis sent five Islanders to the free throw line and Ben Madeiras scored a layup to end the period at 35-21.

Playing catch-up ball in the second half, the Vineyarders came within four (47-51) once and twice within five, but they could never quite catch up. Sabis finished 11 up, 74-63.

The all-tournament team was announced with Jordan Rote of Mt. Everett, Wesley La Motta of Nantucket, John Swan and Matt Rivers of MV, and Joehan Forero of Sabis.

Isiah Wallace of Sabis was chosen MVP.

The ninth Fairleigh Dickinson

Martha's Vineyard's hopes for winning its first Fairleigh Dickinson tourney were doused by North Reading in Saturday's opening round second game, 4-1.

The Hornets were clearly the better team, controlling the pace of the game and keeping the puck in the Vineyard end of the ice while pelting MV goalie Alex Minnehan with a barrage of shots.

One had the feeling that North Reading's goalie was vulnerable, but the Vineyard had few chances to test him.

Scott Maciel scored the Islanders' only goal.

In the consolation game Sunday, the Vineyard and Whitman-Hansen skated to a 2-2 tie. Viera and Tad Gold scored for the Vineyard, which held a 2-1 lead until the clock read 1:12 remaining.

Coyle & Cassidy, which won the first Fairleigh Dickinson nine years ago, won the ninth, Sunday, dropping North Reading, 4-3.

Between periods, Saturday, the MV purple and white house mites took the ice and pleased the packed house with their demonstration of miniature hockey skills. They played to a 1-1 tie.
