Gray wins the OB Memorial Day 5K

Kevin Gray of Roslindale, 28, no stranger to winning distance races on Martha's Vineyard, was first to reach the finish line of the 11th annual Oak Bluffs Memorial Day 5K road race, Sunday. He set a torrid 5:07 pace and finished almost three minutes ahead of 42-year-old Steven Eick of New York who was second.

The rest of the top ten were: (3) Arah Mostofi, 27, Cambridge, 18:46; (4) Paul Vertefeaille, 41, Vineyard Haven, 19:40; (5) Shane McKracken, 52, North Attleboro, 19:59; (6) Leonard Verville, 42, Oak Bluffs, 20:17 (7) Erik Smith, 28, Oak Bluffs, 20:25; (8) Steven Katz, 55, West Tisbury, 20:27; (9) Walter Ricciardi, 52, Aquinnah, 20:36; (10) Matthew Stangoni, 25, Philadelphia, Pa., 20:38.

It was a beautiful clear and warm day, too warm for the runners who prefer to run in a cooling mist. But the efficiency with which race-master Roger Wey conducted the event left no room for complaints. Indeed, the conviviality and camaraderie that is usually present at a 5K (or longer) race was clearly evident.

Mayflower Champions

The Vineyard boys and girls track and field teams have placed first in the Mayflower League finals so often in recent years that it is astounding to learn that this is the very first year that both teams claimed the league championship.

The girls win

The MV girls collected 198 points, 51 more than second place Sacred Heart, 94 more than West Bridgewater in third place. Then came Tri-Country 16, Southeastern 12, Diman Voke 11, and Bristol Plymouth 8.

Island girls took first place in four of the six field events and half of the 10 races.

Alice Hopkins claimed the shot put with a heave of 30' 11". Emma Lee Iversen tossed the discus the farthest, 86' 5". Katrina Nevin cleared 5 feet to win the high jump. Ashley Rebello leapt 14' 6" to earn gold in the long jump.

Ashley Medeiros was the fleetest of the fleet, winning the 100-meter dash in 13.59. Morgan Ibarrondo flew over the low hurdles first in 51.02. Hilary Dreyer won the metric half mile (now called the 800-meter dash!) in 2:32.99.

Both the 4x100 relay team and the 4x400 relay team outpaced the field.

Adding to the MV winning margin were Jannelle Fortes and Ashley Madeiros in the shot, Rebekah Nivala with the discus, Kate Mahoney in the high jump, Morgan Ibarrondo in the long jump, Alexia Schroeder and Kim Carlomagno in the triple, and Cassaundra Gaines in the javelin.
