The Vineyard heats up... and we're not the only ones

Posted August 3, 2006

The recent heat wave has taken the Island by storm, but where exactly was the heat most unbearable yesterday?

At 3 pm yesterday, at South Beach in Edgartown, the MV Coastal Observatory recorded the outside temperature to be 82.4 degrees Fahrenheit. At the same time, the temperature was identical not far away at the Long Point Wildlife Refuge in West Tisbury. Up Island, in Aquinnah, the temperature reached a scalding 94 degrees yesterday afternoon, according to the person who answered the telephone in the Aquinnah town hall. At 3 pm, however, the Chilmark Harbormaster noted the temperature to be a more refreshing 90 degrees on the water in Menemsha.

The Martha's Vineyard Airport reported the temperature to be 93 degrees.

On Chappaquiddick, at the Trustees of Reservations Pocha Pond Gatehouse, the temperature was 85 degrees at 3 pm.

However hot the Island seemed, it was significantly cooler than it was on the mainland. At 3 pm at Logan Airport in Boston, the temperature was 97 degrees, as it was at nearby Fenway Park. At the same time in New York, at LaGuardia Airport, the temperature was just over Boston's, reaching 98 degrees.

If you can't take the heat here in the US, don't head to Morocco for relief, where the heat peaked at 104 degrees yesterday.
