Posted August 10, 2006

The Vineyard women's 4.0 tennis team won the right to represent the Cape & Islands at the Eastern Mass. District tournament at Woburn, last weekend, and were placed in the Red Flight with Weymouth White, Wayside, and Westford.

Their first match was with Weymouth White, Friday evening, which the Island women won, 3-2. Liz Roberts won at first singles, Judy and Nina Bramhall won at first doubles as did Karla Araujo and Sally Lasker at second doubles. All won in straight sets.

Saturday morning the Islanders got by Wayside, 3-2. Roberts won again at first singles and Laura Schroeder defeated her second singles opponent.

The Bramhalls won again at first doubles as Karla and Sally did at second. Linda Leahy and Carolyn Fournier also won their third doubles match, for a 5-0 sweep.

The Vineyarders then trounced Westford, 4-1 with Roberts, the Bramhalls, Karla and Sally, Linda and Carolyn prevailing.

Having won in their red flight, the Islanders went on to the semi-finals against Weymouth Red, the eventual champions of the meet.

Playing second singles for the first time, Liz Roberts won her match. Linda Leahy and Carolyn Fournier triumphed at third doubles, but the Weymouth Reds won the match, 3-2, and the right to go on to the sectional meet at Springfield.

Winning in their flight and qualifying for the semi-finals was the highest the Island team has gone in six trips to Woburn.
