The form of a champion

Tony Grillo is a champion. He is the Massachusetts Junior Golf Champion, a title he won at the Blue Hill Country Club, Canton, in a three-day tournament last week, posting three sub-par rounds and beating the field by 10 strokes. He earned the title with elan.

Tony came into The Times office, Tuesday, as we asked him to and talked of his win as well as other things.

Gratified as he must be with his win at Canton, he seemed more pleased with his third-place finish in a national field of junior golfers at the American Junior Golf Assn. tournament on Tom's Run Golf Course in Blairsville, Penn., just outside of Pittsburgh, July 10-14, and his 11th place finish in the Optimist International Junior Golf Championship tourney at the PGA National Resort in Palm Beach, Fla., July 26-30.

Why the preference? Greater challenge - stronger competition.

In a quiet way, bordering on self-effacement, Tony seems to thrive on competition.

He was asked if there were any holes that gave him trouble at Blue Hill. At first he demurred, "no, not really."

Then a broad smile broke on his face and he said that there were two holes on the course, back to back, and that he bogeyed one and birdied the other each day of the tournament.

Then he added, "There was one occasion when I had some trouble."

Times: "Trouble! What kind of trouble? Water? Sand? Rough?

Tony: (with that big smile again) "No, ...tree."

One gets the impression that Tony is the kind of young man who stays out of trouble but when trouble comes along he deals with it effectively.

We asked him, "Who's your favorite golfer?"

Answer: "I think we all root for Tiger, don't you?"

What's next on the agenda? Beginning Sunday, Tony will join six other junior golfers representing Massachusetts at the Cohasset Country Club in the three-day New England Golf Assn. tourney to crown a New England Junior Golf Champion.

Tony is a straight A student at MVRHS, his father, Joe, told us, and when he thinks of post high school education he focuses on academic strengths, not athletic ones.

Tony is an entirely likeable 16-year-old young man who begins his junior year at Martha's Vineyard Regional in a few weeks. Golf is a fall sport here and Tony will pace the MVRHS team in his quiet, unassuming but highly competitive manner.
