Field hockey team wins again

The MVRHS field hockey team defeated Wareham here, Tuesday, 2-0. The Islanders not only outscored the visitors, they controlled the pace of the game and kept the ball in the Wareham end of the field three quarters of the time. Sophie Lew put the ball in the net 12 and a half minutes into the game, assisted by Jane Alexander.

The second goal was Nina Butler's at 17:17 of the second half with help from Megan Rose.

Midfielders Zoe Fisher and Hannah Van Osten were commended by Coach Lisa Knight for outstanding play.

Colleen Grant was the shutout goalie.

The MV record improved to 2-1-1.

Friday, the Vineyarders outplayed Nantucket on the Whalers turf and held a 1-0 lead until the last two minutes of the game when Cassie Moran scored on a penalty shot for the 1-1 tie.

The Vineyarders also beat Fairhaven, 2-1 and lost to Dighton-Rehoboth, 1-0. Their record stands at 2-1-1.

Jayvees also win

The MV junior varsity also won its game with Wareham, Tuesday, 3-0. Scorers were Olivia Gross, Lonni Phillips, and Kate Cecilio. Savannah Lawson was the shut-out goalie.

Over hill and dale

Rain and wet grounds did not prevent Seekonk from bringing its cross-country teams to the Vineyard, Friday. The Warrior male harriers ran off with an 18-45 win. Seekonk runners were first and second. MV's Lucas Emin (mistakenly called Ryann in last week's Times) led the Vineyarders, finishing third overall in 18:39. Evan Kendall was the second purple runner to cross the line. He was 7th overall in 18:58. The next Vineyarders - Forest Harcourt, Max Conley, Ben Williams, and Connor Rasmussen - placed 10th, 11th, 14th and 15th.

The MV girls squeaked by the Seekonk ladies, 26-29.

Hilary Dreyer completed the run quickest, 20:50. MV also placed 3rd, 6th, 7th, and 9th with Sarah Flanders, Elizabeth Reid, Emily Sobel, and Kim Carlomango, for a total of 26. Seekonk's 2nd , 4th, 5th, 8th and 9th amounted to 29.

Tuesday's scheduled meet with Sacred Heart was postponed to October.
