Islander challenges Rep. Turkington for House seat
Posted November 2, 2006
In a repeat of the 2004 race, Martha's Vineyard Regional High School teacher Jim Powell of West Tisbury is challenging long-time incumbent Eric Turkington of Falmouth for election to the House of Representatives.
The Times asked each man to briefly describe why he deserves Islanders votes.

When I first came to the Vineyard as a candidate for state representative, I knew about six people here. Since then, I've come to know hundreds, if not thousands. You've taken me fishing, swimming, hiking, kayaking, and sailing with you. You've shared with me truck rides, home-cooked meals, your guest rooms, and your stories, hopes, plans and ideas. You've given me more issues of high political heat than any other part of my district, and some of the most rewarding moments in my career. As your Representative, when you call, I answer personally. When you, your town or organization has a problem with the state, I get it resolved. I've always understood that my job was to stand up for your needs and interests on Beacon Hill. And I've found that you don't have to live on the Vineyard to stand up for the Vineyard. You just have to love the place.

The Islands comprise 90 percent of the land and two-thirds of all voters in our district. Most voters are not aware of this fact.
As an Islander, native-born and descended since 1642, I have a unique sense and connection to Islanders' priorities. Indeed, my connection to the Island is an asset, but my credentials foretell future successes.
As a teacher, I successfully lobbied for education funds in excess of $3 million. My latest accomplishment, Senate bill number 2097 and its companion House bill, have passed the Legislature.
As a member of the Martha's Vineyard Commission, I've developed relationships while serving on the Coastal Zone Management.
As a farmer, I know how precious our environment is to preserve for future generations. I advocate for solar and municipal wind development now. I believe that the state representative is our sales representative to Beacon Hill. I believe that I will do the best job serving our Islanders and get positive results.
