Loss to Latin

The girls varsity lost it game with Latin Academy, Saturday, 7-0.

Coach Sam Sherman is not one to complain. We have never heard him even mildly criticize officials.

But the coach was frustrated with the officiating in this case. "What especially bothers me," he told the Times, "we could really skate with them."

Regretably, the Vineyard does not get another opportunity to play Latin this year.

The girls varsity (1-2-1) plays Marshfield at Pembroke on New Year's Day.

A great start

The MVRHS girls junior varsity hockey team has begun its season with two shutouts, both away from home.

On Monday, Dec. 18, the girls trounced Needham at Needham, 6-0. Sophie Lew led the scoring with a hat trick. Amira Madison scored twice, and Marguerite Hegarty added another. Assisting were Jackie Panek (3), Nicole Mercier, and Marguerite Hegarty.

The shutout goalie, Jaimie Forend, was fronted by a strong defense.

Two days later the girls were found battling at Newton North. The Islanders came away with another shutout win, 1-0. The only goal was scored late in the third period by Marguerite Hegarty just before she was knocked to the ice. Amira Madison was credited with an assist.

The jayvees put their 2-0 record on the line with Notre Dame Academy at Hingham this Saturday.

A good start

On New Year's Day, Monday, January 1, there will be an informal five-mile run-around-the-Chop following the annual Murdick's Fudge five-mile race course, beginning at the Tisbury School.

No fee, no shirt, no timing, no losers, all winners. A grand way to begin 2007.

Starting time is 10 am.
