MV Baseball
The first pitch of the first game at the new field was a strike.

A new field for the old game

The sun shone bright enough but a blustery wind made sweaters de rigueur, a windbreaker even better, for those attending the first baseball game to be played on the high school's brand-new diamond, Monday. The fickle breeze picked up dust and carried it into the faces of batters and fans - a minor inconvenience, at least for the fans. Dugouts were only indicated by foundations and bleachers were not yet available. More funds are needed to finish the job, but the field is already a major improvement to the school's sports venue and those responsible for building it are to be congratulated and thanked.

The visiting team of Wareham Vikings certainly found the field to their liking. They scored 17 runs while holding the Islanders to three. Adam Herman scored two of the Vineyard's runs. Wareham improved to 8-5, while M.V. fell to 1-13.

Last Wednesday, the Vineyarders posted their only win of the season defeating Greater New Bedford, here, on the old field, 5-3. M.V. scored four times in the bottom of the fourth. Zach Coutinho's solo home run in the fifth inning was welcome icing on the cake. Sean Jordan started and pitched into the sixth inning for the win. Nick Billingham closed and was credited with a save.

Tomorrow the new baseball field will be opened officially with ceremonies including recognition of the team's seniors, thanks to various benefactors, and a ball game with Bourne (11-4).

Timo Nivala
Timo Nivala, a home-schooled senior, has been filling the 3rd singles seat with distinction.

Tennis players shine at MIAA tourney

Varsity boys tennis players played in the annual MIAA tournament at Barnstable last weekend.

Team captain and first singles player Tim McHugh reached the semi-finals by defeating Ben Bastian of D/Y. then Tamas Bodrog of Bridgewater - Raymond, then gave the top seeded Andrew Bumila of Coyle-Cassidy all he could handle before bowing.

The MV top doubles team, Daniel Han and Dylan Hutchinson beat the Somerset pair, then lost to the top seeds from Attleboro.

Andrew McHugh was given a tough first round draw. He Lost to Duxbury's Will Tucker in a tie-breaker.

Win Grimm filled the third singles slot and played well before losing to Jeff Aiello of Sandwich.

Jonah Lipsky and Seth Seeman, the M.V. second doubles pair, were overmatched by Apponequet.

Match at Sandwich

The Vineyard and Sandwich had something to settle, Tuesday. Their first match here had been halted by a snow squall with the teams tied at 2-2. The first singles match was unfinished. Luke Martin of Sandwich defeated Tim McHugh, taking a third set tie-breaker to give the Blue Knights the match.

The Vineyard reversed that result Tuesday, at Sandwich.

Martin continued his mastery of Tim McHugh in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. But Andrew McHugh won at second singles and Timo Nivala did as well at third.

The Sandwich first doubles pair were too much for Daniel Han and Dylan Hutchinson, 6-0, 6-1, leaving the outcome up to second doubles players, Jonah Lipsky and Win Grimm. The Islanders prevailed after lengthy and tense match play, 5-7, 6-2, 7-5.

The win earned the Islanders a ticket to the State Team Tournament.

Kate Mahoney ran the first leg of the winning 4x400 relay ateam.
