Interscholastics
Last Thursday, the unbeaten, once tied, Oak Bluffs school baseball team visited Tisbury for a game at Veterans Park. The Blazers scored six runs in the top of the first inning and added two more in the second. Meanwhile, pitcher Kevin Galligan was keeping Tisbury off the scoreboard.
In the top of the third, O.B. scored again on a booming triple by Ben Ciciora, But in the bottom of the inning, Tisbury rallied for seven runs making the score after three, 9-7. The big blow was a bases-loaded double by T.J. Gervin. Cory Perrotta replaced Galligan on the mound. Then, with bases loaded, two outs, and Gervin coming to the plate, Ben Ciciora was called to the mound from center field and fired a third strike past T.J.
In the fourth and final inning, O.B. added two more to its lead on a bases-loaded double by Cole Bilodeau. Pitcher Ciciora closed out the inning and the game.
West Tisbury and Edgartown engaged in a close struggle won by the Eagles, 10-9. WesTiz tied its first two games with Tisbury and Oak Bluffs and stands at 0-1-2. Edgartown scored 10 times in the first inning and handed Oak Bluffs its first defeat.
The West Tisbury girls lost their softball game to Edgartown, Tuesday, by the unlikely score of 48-3. The boys baseball team also lost to Edgartown, 12-9.
Little East honors
For the third time, Kelsey MacDonald, a senior at Plymouth State, was named Little East Conference Women's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Year.
Her sister, Taylor, a freshman at Eastern Connecticut State, was chosen league Rookie of the Year.
Troubles at the 4th
In the Boston Globe's colorful 167-page "Golfing New England" is a photo of NHL all-star Cam Neely playing his favorite hole, the par-3 fourth at Farm Neck. "It's a hole that can make or break your front nine," he says and adds, "Anything left is trouble, long is gone, and right is either unplayable or out of bounds. If you are short, chances are you are in a bunker, and don't expect to run it up either."
"It tends to be soft down there," adds Mike Zoll, head pro, "so you've got to find the green" which, incidentally, slopes to the right.
With all its other troubles, there is the hazard of a spectacular view of Sengekontacket Pond backed by Nantucket Sound to take your mind off business.
