A Virginian wins the Murdick's
Saturday's annual Murdick's Fudge 5-mile Run-The-Chop Challenge produced slower times than previous years. Last year, for instance, Kevin Gray of Falmouth completed the run in 25.57. The best time this year was 29:17.69 by 41-year-old Joe Cresko of Arlington, Virginia. John DeWitt of Chilmark was second in 30:59.04.
At the post-race refreshment table offering water, juices, bananas, oranges, and popsicles, many runners spoke of the heat. Despite the heat, 149 runners completed the course,

With hair flying, Katrina Delgadillo of Tisbury was the first woman to reach the finish line.
The fastest female was Katrina Delgadillo, 26, of Vineyard Haven. She was16th overall in 36:01.41, 14 seconds ahead of the second female, Julie Schmidt of North Attleboro.
One hundred forty-nine persons made the run, compared with 157 last year.

Deerfield won the 30-39 three-man team competition with a total of 1:57:53 and an average of 39:07:18 per man.
The winning 30-39 three-women team was from Somerville with an average of 47:16:18 and a 2:21:48.4 total.
In the 40-49 competition, the winning team was Edgartown with a total of 1:49:26, averaging 36:23.05.
The Storrs, Conn., 50-59 team won ,averaging 48:55.83 for a 2:26:47.85 total.
The refreshment department reports that bananas have overtaken oranges as the preferred post race fruit, but popsicles still reign supreme.

Summer hoops at Niantic
The Oak Bluffs Adult Summer Basketball League began play at Niantic Park, Monday, with six of the league's eight teams at play.
In the first game, a particularly physical one, the Rage bested the Celtics, captained by Adam Rebello, 78-60.
The second contest was a run-away win for the Mon-stars who mastered the Future, 76-38. Matt Rivers and Terrell Johnson led all scorers with 21 and 20 points. Chris Joyce, player-coach of the Future, said, "It was a tough first round match-up. The Mon-stars are the best team in the league and we (the Future) have a very young team and it showed."
The final game pitted the Contemporary Landscapers against the high school varsity. The Landscapers won, 50-37 Steve Duarte had the game high, 25. Nico Cuba led the varsity with 11.
The adult league plays every Monday and Friday beginning at 5:30 pm.
A high school league for youngsters 10 to 17 plays Tuesdays and Thursdays.
All games are played at Niantic Park, Oak Bluffs.
