Second season

The women's softball league began its first round of final games in a single-elimination playoff format, the top seeds playing the bottom seeds, with predictable results.

The number one seed Creamers disposed of the last-place Toppers in quick order, 20-1 in five innings. Three Creamers hit home runs: Lisa and Trisha Jendrick and Sam Burns.

Ryan Gold and Caroline Derrig

At West Tisbury, the second-seeded Shady Ladies won by default as the Drillers failed to muster a full team.

Then things got interesting. At Veterans Park, the Honeys scored seven runs in the bottom of the 2nd, three on a bases-loaded triple by Amy Maciel, taking a 9-4 lead, only to see the Late Fees respond with six in the top of the 3rd with another bases-loaded triple, this one by Laura Kimball - to go up 10-9. But that was it for the Fees. In the next five innings the Late Fees threatened but failed to score. The Honeys pushed one run across the plate in the 5th, tying the score at 10, then scored the winner in the bottom of the 8th (extra) on a fluke. Pitcher Laura Kimball made a diving stab at Rachel Baumrin's small pop-up in front of the plate to end the inning. But the ball bounced off her glove and squirted into foul territory as Nicole Gazaille, who had reached on an error, scooted home with the game-ending winning run.

In the late game, under the lights, the Swingers built a 9-0 lead in the first four innings. The Snaps snapped back with five in the top of the 5th, three driven in by a Ryan Gold triple. The Swingers added three more in the bottom of the 6th, which turned out to be the deciding margin as the Snaps rallied with five in the 7th. Jackie Meehan's contribution was a three run homer. The game ended with the bases full of Fees and the potential tying run at first base. Swingers 13-Late Fees 10.

Tuesday the Shady Ladies will host the Swingers at 6:15 and at 7:30 the Creamers take on the Honeys. Tuesday's winners will meet in the playoff finals Tuesday, Aug. 21 at 7 pm to be followed by an all-team cookout. BYOB and food.
