Softball showdown to OB

By Ralph Stewart

A sure sign that the summer tourist season has passed is the playing of the Service Industry Showdown softball game.

The sixth annual tussle between the restaurant pros of Oak Bluffs and Edgartown unfolded on a perfect Monday afternoon at Veteran's Park, with Cottage City winning in a wild 21-13 shootout.

The game is the first in a series extending through Columbus Day, weather permitting.

In truth, Edgartown's participation was largely symbolic, with only five players out of 12 working at the Wharf, Atria, and l'etoile. The rest of the squad was assembled from O.B., Vineyard Haven, and even off-island.

Oak Bluffs blazed out of the blocks to lead 9-1 after two innings. The lead increased to 12-1 in the third before Edgartown roared back to within one, 12-11, by the fifth.

O.B. put up four to Edgartown's one in both the seventh and eighth innings to ring up the final tally. Dave Christensen hit the only home run.

A passel of triples were struck - Jerry Kroup alone had four. Sam Burnes, Caroline Derrig, Matt Chappelle, and Darren Bennett, who was perfect at the plate (4 for 4), had the others.

Game MVP Frank Dumas of Edgartown was 4 for 7 from the plate and made a Willie Mays style over-the- shoulder, home-run robbing catch.

Crystal Robinson had the other defensive gem - a spectacular backpedaling grab in center field.

Kansan wins the NAACP 5K

Nineteen-year-old Kevin Earl of Overland, Kansas, beat out Charles Hridel of Chagrin Falls, Ohio, by 30 seconds to win the 6th annual George V. Tankard Memorial NAACP 5K road race in Oak Bluffs, Saturday.

Forty-two people made the run.

The first female to finish the course was Katrina Delgadillo. 27, of Vineyard Haven. She was seventh overall in 22:06.

The rest of the top ten were: (3) Jeremy Alley-Tarter, 11, of Oak Bluffs in 20:42 (4) Daniel Vaughn, 32, of Edgartown in 20:55 (5) Patrick Parker, 46, of Vineyard Haven in 21:35 (6) Wayne Guyther, 50, of Vineyard Haven in 21:52 (8) Leonard Verville, 43, of Oak Bluffs in 22:16 (9) Todd Cleland, 38, of Oak Bluffs in 22:25 and (10) John Flannery, 61, of Edgartown in 23:54.

Whalers sunk

The Nantucket field hockey team brought their 4-2 record to the Vineyard, Tuesday, and after 60 minutes of hard play, they left on the short end of a 3-2 count..

Phebe Bates gave the Vineyard a 1-0 lead before the game was four minutes old. The Whalers evened the score with seven and a half minutes left in the first half.

Nantucket took a 2-1 lead early in the second period but Bates responded and the score was tied again. With 5:40 left on the clock Hayley Pierce scored the third purple goal and M.V. held on to win, 3-2.
