Saturday was cold, in the thirties early on, and the wind that always blows across the high school campus added to the discomfort of friends and relatives and sports writers come to cheer and greet the runners finishing the 5K for K.J. course in a chute not far from the new Martha's Vineyard Regional High School baseball field.
One hundred sixty-four persons registered, their $20 entrance fee going to the Kevin Johnson Cross Country Scholarship Fund. One hundred forty-five runners/walkers completed the course.

The tall, genial, guy who looks more like an English Lit professor than a long distance runner, but who shows up at every 5K or longer race on the Vineyard and a whole lot more off Island, is Bill Brown, 54, of Vineyard Haven.
Recently, Bill (and Marylee Schroeder) ran the Marshall Marathon at Marshall University, Huntington, West Vriginia, home of "The Thundering Herd."
Bill also ran the annual Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot, in Oak Bluffs on Thursday, and joined the throng in Saturday's 5K for K.J. at the high school.
Bill is shooting for membership in the 50 States Club, which is made up of runners who have run marathons in each of the 50 United States. He has 46 states under his belt and has plans for the remaining four. Bill is scheduled to run a marathon on Oahu, Hawaii, December 6. In April he is due to run at Dearborn, Michigan. Minnesota is reserved for May and June should find Bill among the marathoners at Anchorage, Alaska, which will complete his 50-state circuit.
To date, Bill has run 93 marathons including five Bostons.
Bill credits Steve Trieschman for turning him on to the fulfilling joys of long distance running.
Amory Salem, 35, of Cambridge swooped into the finish chute like a swan coming in for a landing on Chilmark Pond, 13 seconds ahead of 27-year-old Chris Fischer of Chilmark to claim this year's Turkey Trot title in 18:48.
She was the first female overall winner of a 5K in this interested observer's memory and certainly the first to win the Thanksgiving Day race.
Thursday morning was bright and clear and mild enough to make one think more of dawning spring than looming winter.
A happy throng of 104 runners, almost twice last year's number of rain-soaked racers, convened at the Oak Bluffs police station - aka the old town hall - for the annual Turkey Trot road race.
Race impressario Roger Wey got things under way after explaining a change in the course to begin on Kennebunk instead of Circuit Ave because of potholes in the latter.
A third of the turkey trotters finished in less than 26 minutes.

Sixteen riders on as many mounts convened at the weigh-in station off Barnes Road for a trail ride through the state forest on Sunday morn.
The idea of a trail ride on Thanksgiving Day occurred first to Linda DeWitt, an Edgartown trail warden and horsewoman.
It made sense. The shotgun hunting season would begin the day after and common sense would keep all but imprudent riders out of the state forest for at least two weeks. Robert Green and William Bassett of the Edgartown Byways Committee were supportive and Barbara Paciello and Susannah Sturgis helped with the organizing.
The trail headed ESE along old Dr. Fisher Road, formerly the main east-west mid-Island route. The recent nor-easter had left its mark along the well-used trail, but volunteers had cleared a way wide enough for the riders.
The trail turned north at the north-south fire lane eventually emerging on Tar Kiln Road, the only stretch of pavement on the ride.
Three-Cornered Rock Road led riders behind the Vineyard Golf Club though a heavily wooded area and eventually back to the starting point via Dr. Fisher Road where refreshments for horses and riders - apples, carrots, cookies, bottled water - were gratefully enjoyed.
