Male and female graduated hoops

Sunday's varsity versus alumnae and alumni games provided parents and other basketball fans with entertainment and some young - and not so young - men and women with exercise.

The female grads enjoyed some board strength with Karen Shemeth, Tiffany Smalley and Amy Minor grabbing more than their share of loose balls following missed shots.

But the varsity would not be denied. Julie Perry and Hayley Pierce were an inside-outside threat primarily responsible for turning a 34-29 deficit into a 46-40 advantage. The final count: Varsity 58, Alumnae 54

Boys varsity vs. Alumni

The first half of the boys varsity vs. alumni game could hardly have been closer. Neither side could sustain an offense. At the break, the grads were up by one, 21-20.

But grads Matt Rivers, John Swan, Tim McHugh, and Tererell Johnson upped the ante in the second half, racing to a 40-31 lead and increased that to a 56-37 alumni win at game's end.

Martha's Vineyard Youth Basketball too

Between games the Martha's Vineyard Youth Basketball girls junior high travel team demonstrated their skills before an appreciative audience. The purple shirts coached by Amy Maciel scored more often than the white shirts coached by Don Persson, but no one was really counting.

A good start

On New Year's Day, Tuesday, Jan. 1, Martha's Athletic Club invites any and all to join it in a fun run-around-the-Chop, following the course of the annual Murdick's Fudge five miler, beginning at the Tisbury school.

No sweat, no registration fee, no competition - just a grand way to start the new year.

On the road

The Martha's Vineyard Youth Basketball girls travel team won its game at Taunton, Saturday, 32-21. With 10 points, Madison Hughes was high scorer. Catherine Todd led in rebounds with five. Sarah Williston came off the bench to contribute five points, four rebounds, and eight steals.

Later that same day the Islanders swamped Lakeville, there, 49-8. All the Islanders scored but Jenny Lindland's 10 was high. She also led in rebounds with eight. Megan McHugh contributed eight points and Alex Mark provided six more.

After a week off, the Vineyarders will take on Middleboro and front-running Sandwich.
