First among us, for 2008

Mary and Jonathan Boyd of Chilmark with their newborn girl, Emily Thomas Boyd, yesterday at the Martha's Vineyard Hospital. Emily weighed 6 pounds, 11 ounces when she arrived at 4:50 am on New Year's Day.

Mr. Boyd is a charter fisherman. The happy grandparents are Chris and Barbara Murphy of Chilmark and Joan and David Boyd of Woodstock, Conn.

"It was quite a New Year's present," said mom, a fourth-grade teacher at the West Tisbury School.
