Girls varsity hockey

The Duxbury Green Dragons were too much for the Vineyard varsity girls hockey team, Thursday, skating to a 5-1 win at the Martha's Vineyard Arena.

The Islanders survived the scoreless first period thanks to some acrobatic saves in goal by keeper Jamie Forend. Most of the period's action took place in the Vineyard end of the rink, but both Nica Slvia and Christina Wiley managed break-away shots on goal.

One minute into the second frame Christina charged again only to be frustrated by the Duxbury goalie. Duxbury posted its first goal at 5:42 of the second period and added a second goal with one second remaining in the period. The Dragons smoked the third period with three more tallies.

Christina Wiley provided a bright moment for the home team when she snagged the puck deep in the Islanders' end of the ice, raced the length of the rink, eluding would-be blockers, and scored with 19 seconds remaining in the game.

At Franklin, Saturday, Sam Sherman's troops were overmatched and lost, 6-1

Monday, at Waltham, the Islanders scored first and held the lead through most of the first period. But the Hawks had the last laugh, 4-1.

The team is at Duxbury on Saturday.

Squirts get even

The Martha's Vineyard Youth Hockey Squirts team avenged a previous 8-4 loss to Yarmouth-Dennis, Monday, at the Martha's Vineyard Arena, shutting them out, 2-0.

The Islanders did all of their scoring in the first period. Greg McCarren found the back of the net with help from Steven Brown. Later, Tristan Araujo scored unassisted.

Goalie Thalysson Ribiero anchored a total team defensive effort.

A week ago Thursday the Martha's Vineyard Squirts scored in every period and trashed the Barnstable Thrashers at Barnstable, 3-1. Ninoa Cooperrider scored in the first period. The second goal was by Joshua Forend, assisted by Steven Brown. Jack Slayton lit the lamp in period three.

Ribiero was the winning goalie.

The Squirts next game is Sunday versus Lower Cape at the Charles Moore Arena in Hyannis.

Jayvee trifecta

The Martha's Vineyard Regional High School boys junior varsity played three games, back to back, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, winning one and dropping two.

Wednesday the Islanders edged Bridgewater-Raynham at Bridgewater, 2-1 on goals by Ben Ferry and Jarek Peters. The next day, Barnstable won at Kennedy Arena, Hyannis, 5-3. Cody Pachico, Oliver Osnoss and Ben Ferry scored the Vineyard goals.

Friday, at Sandwich, the Islanders bowed, 5-2. Daron Stobie and Ben Rossi provided the points at the Martha's Vineyard Arena.

Lady Vineyarders win

The 14 and under Lady Vineyarders avenged a previous 8-1 loss to the Falmouth Pride by besting the off-Islanders at the Arena, 4-3.

With Texy Craig in goal, in the words of coach Kelleher, the Ladies "flashed some offense and stellar defensive play by Sophie Sobel and Aubrey Ashmun."

Lily Gazaille tallied first for Martha's Vineyard assisted by Elizabeth Kelleher. Olivia Cimeno scored the next two goals with help from Kelleher, Gazaille, and Maggie Johnson.

Elizabeth Kelleher's game winning goal, the Vineyard's fourth, was unassisted.

The Lady Vineyarders are looking for more players. The team practices Mondays and Wednesdays at 4:50 at the Arena.

RCBL renewal

After a two-week hiatus, the RCBL resumes play at the Boys & Girls Club, Monday. The winless Celtics (0-2) have to take on the unbeaten Lakers (2-0) at 8 pm after the Bulls (1-1) vs. Heat (1-1) contest, which begins at 6:15.
