The Vineyard Haven schooner Alabama, Captain Ian Ridgeway, was third in the 24th annual Gloucester Schooner Festival race on August 31. Alabama, along with Shenandoah, is one of the Black Dog Tall Ships. Sailing conditions for the 21 entrants were excellent, with clear, sunny skies and 15-20 knots of dry northwest wind. Alabama finished just behind the schooners Virginia and American Eagle.

"It was an awesome day of sailing and an excellent event," said Captain Ridgeway. "There is so much tradition here in Gloucester that I'm really proud to come up here and represent the era, the Martha's Vineyard sailing community and the Black Dog Tall Ships. We're already looking forward to next year."

The Great Provincetown Schooner Regatta and Yacht Race, to be held Saturday in Provincetown harbor, is next for Alabama.
