The high school girls varsity ice hockey team opened its seasonal play versus Wilmington, here, Friday, and gave the Wildcats a good tussle before conceding 4-2.

The visitors posted three goals before Emily Cimeno converted a pass from Celia Mercier to put the Vineyard on the board late in the second period.

Gillian O'Connell's goal, assisted by Maggie Johnson and Lily Gazaille at 5:50 in the third frame, brought the Islanders within one of a win.

 But Wilmington was not through.

A fourth goal was icing on the cake, and the Wildcats sailed off with a 4-2 initial win.
