Human goodness and a hanging plant

To the Editor:

I am writing this letter to thank a young lady for an incredible act of kindness, which reaffirmed my belief in human goodness.

I was driving on the Vineyard Haven-Edgartown Road last week, looking for a hanging plant for my deck, when suddenly my car started to veer off the road with a loud bang. Fortunately, I was almost opposite the Jardin Mahoney garden center, so I limped into the parking lot, jumped out of my car and viewed a totally flat tire.

While I debated what to do next, I spotted the perfect hanging basket in Mahoney’s floral display and hailed a young woman who was watering plants. She unhooked the hanging pot and headed for the parking lot and said, “How will I know your car?”

I said, “You can’t miss it: I have a flat tire.”

At that, she headed out and when she reached my car, she got out my jack from the trunk and for the next 25 minutes changed my tire.

I asked her who was in charge, and she said, “Look for Paul.” I found him and told him what an amazing job this young woman had done. He followed me, with his gorgeous golden retriever, to the car and said, “Hi, Lori.” It turned out Paul is the owner of the garden center, and Lori is his daughter! I offered to pay her, but she refused, so this is my way of saying, thank you for all you did for me.
