Dukes County Veterans Agent Jo Ann Murphy alerted The Times about calls she recently received from Island veterans and people who support veterans’ organizations about suspect requests for donations from phone solicitors.
“Make sure you know who you’re giving to and what it’s supposed to be funding,” Ms. Murphy said. “One gentleman asked that question and the solicitor hung up on him. Another was told to put money or a check out under a shingle on his porch.”
The Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office (AGO) offers a registry that allows users to search for and access the annual reports of public charities and nonprofit organizations filed with the AGO, as well as documents filed by professional fundraisers. It is available online at www.charities.ago.state.ma.us.
