On the heels of a three cent per gallon increase in the state gas tax, gas prices in Massachusetts have fallen by nine cents a gallon over the past month. AAA of Southern New England reported Monday that prices dropped two cents a gallon over the past week, to an average of $3.62 per gallon, eight cents higher than the national average of $3.54. The average price of gas a year ago was 11 cents higher, at $3.73. AAA survey takers found gas selling for as low as $3.46 per gallon and as high as $3.99.
That would have been a bargain on the Vineyard, where the price for a gallon of regular Monday was about $4.60.
