Community pulls for Olivia Hart

This past Saturday, Oct. 24, the community of Martha’s Vineyard came together to support one of their own, Olivia Hart, who was recently diagnosed with cardiomyopathy, a disease of the heart muscle. Olivia underwent surgery on Oct. 23 for a left ventricular assist device that will help her heart function as she awaits a transplant.

On Saturday, several hundred Islanders joined the owners and staff of the Seafood Shanty to raise money for Olivia. A trip to Hawaii, nights at local hotels, and gift certificates for on-Island restaurants were some of the donations offered to support the cause; around 110 items were donated. The Seafood Shanty charged $5 for a raffle ticket, and the most expensive items donated were available through a silent auction. Paul Size, Gordon Healy, and DJ Mateus Destefani provided the music.

A total of $38,000 was raised, and, in addition, the gofund me page, A Heart for Olivia Hart, set up by Olivia’s twin sister, Sofia Hart, has received more than $20,000 in contributions so far.

Olivia will return to the Island once she has recovered from surgery, to wait for her a new heart.
