Michelle Bettencourt and Shawn Schofield topped the field at the Airport Fitness and Tennis Center’s mixed doubles January Follies tennis tournament, a fundraiser for the Island Food Pantry.
Bettencourt and Schofield were top winners in the draw in the 3.5 and over division. They beat Beth Sawyer and Ted Murphy 6-3, 6-3 in the finals. Michelle Bettencourt and Shawn Schofield came through to the finals, besting Jen Combra and Paul Ulyatt in a tiebreaker 6-3, 6- 7 and 10-3 in the tiebreaker. Beth Sawyer and Ted Murphy topped June Flake and Patrick Caine in a tiebreaker as well 6-7, 6-1 and 10-5 to claim a spot in the finals.
Maya Moran and Scott Lively took the honors in the mixed doubles 3.5 and under division. They beat Susan Staudt and Kye Howell 6-1, 6-4 in the finals. They claimed their spot in the finals over Heidi White and Brooks Billingham at 6-2, 6-4, and Maria McFarland and George Ikonoma 7-5, 6-3. Susan Staudt and Kai Howell earned their berth in the finals over Bev Mazza and Leo Mchugh 7-5, 6-2.
Airport Fitness and Tennis will host its Love at First Set Valentine’s Day weekend February 13 and 14, a fundraiser for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. All tennis players are invited.
