A memorial gathering for Marianne Goldberg, the Chilmark patron of the arts who died December 21, will be held at the Chilmark Community Center on Sunday, January 31, at 3:30 pm.

In her youth, Ms. Goldberg trained as a choreographer and immersed herself in the worlds of academics, dance, and performance art, writing for scholarly journals and dance magazines. She envisioned an artistic center where artists, writers, musicians, and performers of all disciplines would find a home to voice themselves and collaborate across forms.

As Founder and Artistic Director of Pathways Projects Institutes, Ms. Goldberg realized her dream to provide Vineyard artists with a space in which to express themselves each winter for five months. Her projects at Pathways included the annual OceA Wilderness Festival in 2010, Imagined Gardens and Landscapes in 2012, and MAKE WAVES Martha’s Vineyard in 2015. Her ongoing personal choreography and photography project, UNFURLING/To Inhabit Together, explored ocean geography, kinetic architecture, and multimedia in collaboration with Island musicians and performers from The Yard.

Her generosity extended to providing financial support to artists with Honoraria Awards for new projects, and by underwriting programs by sister arts organizations, including Featherstone Center for the Arts, The Yard, Noepe Literary Arts Center, and The M.V. Hebrew Center.

On Sunday, regular participants at Pathways will share music, writing, and a segment of Ms. Goldberg’s signature choreography and poetry in honor of her contribution to the Island’s arts community.

Donations in her memory may be made to Pathways Projects Institutes Limited, PO Box 437, Chilmark, MA, 02535.
