Nice people

To the Editor:

To get to my highway mailbox, I must cross State Road. One morning recently I walked across, extracted my mail, and walked back.

A car pulled up and stopped near me. Puzzled, I looked at the driver. “You dropped a letter,” he shouted. Sure enough, there was an envelope lying in the highway.

The driver jumped out, picked up the envelope, handed it to me, jumped back in his car, and drove off as I waved my thanks.

It is a proposition impossible to prove, but I do believe that our Island contains an exceptional number of people who are disposed to do an act of kindness for a complete stranger.
