Psychotherapist Deborah Withers now offering equine therapy

Deborah Withers has expanded her practice as a psychotherapist to include equine therapy, where she will use horses to assist with growth and learning for her patients.

Ms. Withers and her daughter Lauren Withers were recently certified as EAGALA mental health and equine specialists. According to their website, EAGALA, the Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association, is the leading international nonprofit association for professionals incorporating horses to address mental health and personal development needs.

Ms. Withers is specifically interested in using equine therapy as a treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among veterans, as well as in her work with families, children, couples, and groups. She has been in business since 1988 and reopened her practice full-time on the Vineyard in 2011.

In addition to equine therapy, Ms. Withers specializes in treating depression, anxiety, eating disorders, trauma, and PTSD in adults and children aged 4 through adolescence. Ms. Withers says that her special interest is in working with military families suffering from the traumatic effects of war. She also creates and sells organic, unprocessed, and fairly traded horse snacks under the name Withers & Withers Healthy Horse Products.

Ms. Withers’ practice is located at 645 State Road in West Tisbury. For more information about her services, call 978-456-7705, or visit her product website at
