On Sunday evening, May 1, Stevens Chapel at the Unitarian Universalist Society (238 Main Street, Vineyard Haven) will be transformed into a coffeehouse for an evening of jazz. According to a press release, Jeremy Berlin and Eric Johnson, a well-known Island jazz duo, will perform both old favorites and original compositions. Berlin, a pianist, started playing on the Island while in college, joined Johnny Hoy and the Bluefish in 1993, and went on two tours with the Nina Simone Band before forming a jazz duo with Johnson in 2002. Johnson, a guitarist, composer, and bassist, was a performer and educator both in the Boston area and, later, in New York City. He has recorded albums of standards and originals, as well as a critically acclaimed tribute to the lesser-known jazz pianist and composer Herbie Nichols. The concert is part of the “Music in the Chapel” concert series, which will help fund much-needed renovations to the 19th century wooden chapel. Suggested donation: $15. Coffee, soft drinks, and sweets will be served. For more information, contact Diane Purvis at 914-428-7657, or dianehpurvis@gmail.com.
