A temporary interruption in Comcast high-speed broadband service left some Island customers in the Internet dark early Tuesday morning. Individuals, businesses, and towns reported problems accessing the web. West Tisbury town offices, including the police department, had no or limited service.

A Comcast spokesman told The Times that late Monday night Comcast undertook maintenance of its network, because generally that is when there is the least amount of activity.

In the process, a number of modems failed to reboot as they ordinarily would. Customers who contacted Comcast were advised to manually reboot their modems by simply unplugging the modem power cords and plugging them back in.

The company said home customers can download the free Xfinity My Account App that allows the modem to be rebooted through one tap, avoiding a service call. For more information, go to customer.xfinity.com.
