The Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School track and field teams competed in the MIAA Division 4 state championships on Saturday at Norwell High School and came home with three school records and a division champion.
Junior Eniss Foster outperformed 46 competitors in the long jump with a 21-foot, 11-inch performance. This is the second time in school history that a Vineyard athlete has won the long jump. Ben Higgins won in 1998. Foster also was fourth in the triple jump (42′ 7.5″).
Chase Silvia picked up points in the high jump, placing sixth. The boys team finished 14th overall of 38 teams scored.
The girls had three record-breaking performances, and Olivia Smith was part of all three. First up was the 100 meter hurdle prelims. Olivia clocked a 15.37 time, breaking the record set by Emma Lee Iversen in 2009. Next, after about a minute to gather herself, Smith jumped 17 feet, 5.5 inches, breaking her own school record by half an inch. Olivia finished in second place in the long jump. In the hurdle finals, Smith ran 15.74, good for third place. Later, under the lights, the girls 4×100 meter relay team of Julia Hart, Madison Moreis, Natalijia Lakis, and Smith broke the school record set last year, running a time of 51.67, placing them seventh. Madison Moreis placed fourth in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, and Rose Engler took seventh in the mile with a time of 5:33.31. The girls team placed 11th of 42 teams scored.
For Foster, Smith, and Moreis, the All State championship at Westfield State is next. Only the top 24 competitors in each event from the entire state will compete.
