Light shines in their memory

Handmade lighthouses by the Gatchell family.

To the Editor:

On Sunday, July 17, the Gatchell families of Oak Bluffs will donate solar-powered, handcrafted lighthouses to the Portuguese-American Feast in memory of the following people: Otis and Mary Rogers; Mary Ann Alwardt; Donald Billings; Robert Phillips; Daniel Kaeka III; Richard “Buzzy” Blankenship; Robert Tilton; Donald Ben David; Dennis P. Alley; George Santos Sr.; George White and Arthur Ben David.

These lighthouses are approximately 32 inches tall and resemble the East Chop Lighthouse. They are designed for everyday, outdoor use. But we know many people who bring them in to use them indoors as a night light after they have been in the sun during the day.

The feast takes place at the Holy Ghost Society on Vineyard Avenue in Oak Bluffs, and all are welcome. Funds raised from the sales of these lighthouses go to charities, scholarships, and other worthy causes.

As a family we mourn the loss of these fine people, and this is our small way of keeping their memories alive.
