Eight-year-old Michael Calheta, a member of the YMCA of Martha’s Vineyard Makos swim team, broke a pair of team records and won two events at a USA swim meet at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy pool on Nov. 17-18.
While swimming with the WACK team (a combination of swimmers from Nantucket and Eastham), Michael competed in eight events in the 8-and-under age group, placing first in the 25 butterfly and 50 breaststroke, second in the 50 backstroke, 25 breaststroke and 50 butterfly, third in the 25 freestyle, fifth in the 100 freestyle and sixth in the 50 freestyle. Both of his swims in the butterfly set new Makos team records. In the 25 butterfly, Michael won with a time of 23.6, beating the old mark of 25 seconds, and followed up by finishing the 50 butterfly in 54.90, down from 1:00.13.
The Makos are coached by Rainy Goodale. For more information on how to join the swim team, contact the YMCA of MV at 508-696-7171.
