That boat going back and forth across Vineyard Haven Harbor Thursday afternoon was conducting a survey of the area to determine if there is any dredging needed at or around the Steamship Authority slip.

The gray boat, labeled Holt Marc Hydrographic Survey, made passes back and forth in the inner harbor, nosing all the way up to the beach sand.

“It was a survey of the dock area, yes,” Sean Driscoll, spokesman for the SSA, wrote in an email responding to a question about the boat. “As I previously noted, this is a repeat of a bathymetric survey in the area done last year that showed no shoaling; we are repeating the survey to examine the results for any changes in the area.”

Tisbury harbormaster John Crocker and SSA officials have been at odds over whether the harbor needs to be dredged. Town and Steamship officials got together last week, Crocker said. “We’re at the stage where we’re gathering data to see what the next steps are,” he said. “It’s a logical approach.”
